Blender’s Notes Ageusia (Taste) ~ Anosmia (Smell) Repair – WIP:
Steep Me Self Help Tea combinations are a terrific way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love for you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working. All our teas go through a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination. Once we have 100 people or more evaluating the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.
This blend was built to help build back your taste and smell. Studies show many people can lose their senses of taste or smell, likely because the virus damages their olfactory nerve and cells that support it. The combination of herbs will focus on your central nervous system – we want to nourish the system and help reduce inflammation. The second part of the tea blend will help to heal the olfactory nerve – so that communication between the two systems is healed and working correctly. Anosmia refers to a nasal condition when a person suffers from a loss of the sense of smell. Sometimes it might be a birth defect characterizing complete loss of smell which is referred to as ‘congenital anosmia’ or sometimes it can happen later in life due to some underlying health condition, which is referred to as ‘Hyposmia.’ Anosmia occurs when the nerves transmitting signals from the nose to the brain after identifying a particular smell gets damaged due to some accident or blocked due to nasal congestion or some other health conditions, hindering the ability to smell. In most cases, anosmia occurs when one is suffering from cough, cold, sinus, rhinitis, a benign growth blocking the olfactory nerve, headache, stress, or some injury in the temporal lobe. Loss of taste, or ageusia, refers to the inability to detect flavors. This condition can significantly affect one’s enjoyment of food and drink, potentially leading to changes in appetite and nutrition. While several factors, including aging, medication, and illness, can cause taste impairment, it often signals an underlying health issue that needs attention. Common symptoms may last anywhere from a couple of days to a prolonged period. A lack of smell and taste not only keeps you from enjoying your favorite foods and fragrances but can also be described as a disorienting experience that can alter several aspects of your day-to-day life. Moreover, having a lack of smell and taste in a world so dependent on our five senses can have dangerous consequences, like the inability to smell fire or toxic chemicals. When inflammation and other conditions damage the neurons that power your sense of smell, it takes time for them to recover and return to their pre-illness state. We are focusing on inflammation and nerve repair to help bring about proper taste and smell abilities.
In this blend we included Garlic. Garlic has many anti-inflammatory properties which have been found to have many amazing impacts in helping get rid of any kind of inflammation affecting the nasal pathway and promotes better breathing, which has then been associated with restoration of the sense of smell more. Ashwagandha has been added because this powerful herb significantly reduces cortisol levels (the primary stress hormone), helping reduce stress and anxiety. It is recognized as an adaptogen, a substance that helps protect from stress. We included Dandelion Root and Astralagus because of their anti-viral capability. Next, we added Horseradish. Compounds found in horseradish are excellent natural antioxidants which can help stimulate, improve the body’s white blood cell supply, and protect us from illness. A compound found in horseradish known as glucosinolate goes through certain chemical reactions which activate enzymes responsible for detoxifying the body of harmful free radicals linked to cancer. It can help to clear up any excess mucus in the respiratory system and sinuses. The Allyl isothiocyanate found in horseradish has powerful and natural antimicrobial effects that can help defend the body from numerous bacterial infections including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. We also added Fenugreek which is great at reducing inflammation. We included Oregano because it contains rosmarinic acid, a mast cell stabilizer that is anti-inflammatory. It is also heralded for its ability to reduce cytokine release, for a double punch to chronic inflammation. Oregano is rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help fight damage from harmful free radicals in the body. Rich in folate, this universal herb helps form RNA and DNA building blocks for cellular regeneration. We also know that oregano contains vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as fiber, folate, iron, magnesium, vitamin B6, calcium, and potassium. We included Parsley because it is rich in apigenin, a flavonoid that reduces inflammation by reducing the production of TNF-alpha, IL-8, IL-6, and COX-2. It is commonly thought to aid in detoxification, your blood purification system, and often touted to have the ability to escort mercury out of your body, which can sometimes be found in the environment and dental fillings. Like basil, parsley contains eugenol that inhibits the enzymes that produce the enemy — inflammation. We included Rosemary because the polyphenols and terpenes in rosemary are great weapons against inflammation because they are naturally occurring antioxidants. They have the power to neutralize free radicals in the blood, which shuts down the inflammatory response. As a result, veins and arteries are less likely to become narrowed or clogged, and may lessen pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with peripheral neuropathy. We included Thyme because it contains apigenin, a plant flavonoid that reduces cytokine release from mast cells and helps decrease inflammation. Volatile oils in thyme include carvacolo, borneol, geraniol, and thymol, with powerful antiseptic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties that have also been shown to be effective against a host of different bacteria and fungi, including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. Having plenty of bacterial and fungal defenders on board helps to give your immune system a fighting chance. We included Basil because it provides vitamin A, which contains beta-carotene, powerful antioxidants that protect cell linings in many structures of your body from free radical damage, including blood vessels that nourish your nerves. Potentially the most beneficial aspect of this herb for nerve damage comes from its content of flavonoids, other powerful antioxidants. Further human studies are needed, but a host of preliminary findings suggest that flavonoids block molecules that stimulate inflammation. Research has shown strongly shown that basil restricts the growth of harmful bacteria, too numerous to list. Bacteria, when left to proliferate, leads to chronic inflammation, which may lead to nerve cell damage, among a host of other diseases, including heart disease and cancer.
In this blend we added Borage. Borage is rich in gamma linoleic acid (GLA), which is an omega-6 fatty acid that has been shown to decrease inflammation. We also added Chamomile. Chamomile is used to reduce inflammation and swelling and provide faster wound healing because of the high concentration of phytochemicals which makes it commonly used for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antidiarrheal effects. Lemon Balm was added because of powerful compounds like rosmarinic acid and eugenol. These compounds have been shown to have neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, making lemon balm a potential ally in supporting the health of the vagus nerve. Passionflower was added because of its renowned strong calming herb that is particularly beneficial in treating anxiety. It is helpful in relieving muscle tension and other symptoms of extreme anxiety. It is especially good for nervous insomnia — the kind that keeps you lying in bed awake, worrying until the early hours. It is also useful during times of extreme emotional upset. Next, we added Echinacea. Echinacea is commonly used to shorten the duration of or prevent the common cold and flu. Echinacea is rich in substances believed to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have antiviral and antioxidant effects. Dill Seed was added help provide relief from insomnia, hiccups, diarrhea, dysentery, menstrual disorders, and respiratory disorders. It is also good for oral care and can be a powerful boost for your immune system. We also added Mug wort. Mug wort contains the compounds of camphor, pinene, and cineole—are said to have potent antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal effects. The specific benefits of mug wort tea are due to the possible presence of flavonoids, triterpenes, and other antioxidant compounds, as well as vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin E, potassium, iron, calcium, and various B-family vitamins. We also include Rhodiola. Rhodiola has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, can stimulate the nervous system, and may boost neurotransmitter levels. It has been reported to help improve cognitive function, enhance learning and memory, and support anxiety. Next, we included Gingko. Gingko can be helpful in improving things like anxiety, memory, cognitive function. Ginkgo works by altering levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, and by lowering inflammation in the nervous system that makes it helpful for boosting nervous system function and preventing deterioration and damage. WE also included Valerian Root because it is a strong calming herb that is particularly beneficial for relaxing the nervous system and body when it is overactive. It can do this by affecting levels of neurotransmitters involved in rest and sleep. Finally, we included Nettles. Nettles are high in calcium, magnesium, trace minerals, chlorophyll, chromium, cobalt, iron, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, sulfur, protein, manganese, selenium, vitamin C, D, K and B complex, and carotenes. It can restore the function to adrenal gland, a diuretic to help flush toxins, a blood purifier, an astringent, an anti-inflammatory and it helps the body to heal wounds by promoting cell growth and repair.
