Blender’s Notes Anticonvulsant ~ Seizures ~ Epilepsy Micro-Nutrition — Glutathione:

Steep Me Micro-Nutrition combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits from different combinations of Vitamins and Minerals. With this blend we have combined vitamins, minerals and herbs to help the body balance according to seizures that can happen in the body without any knowing cause. These items are called Anticonvulsants and are meant to supplement your current regime. Certain herbs have shown anticonvulsant properties and may help reduce seizure activity or support neurological health. While they are not substitutes for prescribed medication, they have been traditionally used in complementary approaches. These herbs can help control the seizure causing neurons which result in calming the excited activities of the brain.

What are Seizures? A seizure is a sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain. It can cause changes in behavior, movements, feelings, and levels of consciousness. Epilepsy is defined as having two or more seizures at least 24 hours apart that do not have a known cause. But epilepsy does not cause all seizures. There are many types of seizures. They have a range of symptoms and vary in how much they affect your daily life. Seizure types also vary by where they begin in the brain and how far they spread. Most seizures last from 30 seconds to two minutes. A seizure that lasts longer than five minutes is a medical emergency. Seizures can happen after a stroke or a head injury. An infection such as meningitis or another illness may also be the cause. But often the cause is not known. Symptoms vary based on the type of seizure. They also range from mild to serious. Seizure symptoms may include ~ Short-lived confusion ~ A staring spell ~ Jerking movements of the arms and legs that cannot be stopped ~ Loss of consciousness or awareness ~ Changes in thinking or emotions. These may include fear, anxiety, or a feeling of already having lived the moment, called Deja vu. Most seizures fall into one of two classes called focal or generalized. In this blend we based it off our Japanese Ceremony Grade Matcha. Matcha tea has various health benefits, including enhancing cognitive function, cardio-metabolic health, and anti-tumorigenesis plus it contains antioxidant catechins, chlorophyll, and the amino acid L-theanine. The L-Theanine amino acid promotes relaxation without sedation and may increase levels of GABA, serotonin, and dopamine—neurotransmitters involved in mood and neural stability. Also, Matcha decreases stress, slightly enhances attention and memory, and has no effect on mood. Matcha may also have anti-cancer effects due to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is also a potent antioxidant that may reduce oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, both of which are implicated in seizure disorders. While matcha contains less caffeine than coffee, it can still function as a stimulant which should be noted! Next, we included our Steep Me Glutathione Blend. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant found in every cell that has drawn attention for its potential anticonvulsant effects, especially in the context of epilepsy and seizure disorders and its ability to protect brain cells from oxidative stress, which is known to contribute to seizure activity. Oxidative stress is a known contributor to seizure activity. Glutathione helps neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may reduce neuronal damage and seizure susceptibility, and it may modulate neurotransmitter balance, particularly by influencing glutamate and GABA levels—key players in seizure control. Valerian Root was also added because it is known for its calming effects, it may help reduce seizure frequency by promoting relaxation and sleep. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) is traditionally used to treat insomnia and anxiety disorders. It contains valerianic acid, sesquiterpenes, and iridoid glycosides, which potentiate GABAergic neurotransmission, providing anticonvulsant and sedative effects. Valerianic acid inhibits the breakdown of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that calms neural activity. By increasing GABA levels, valerian may help reduce excessive neuronal firing, which is a hallmark of seizures. The root part of this herb is composed of various classes of chemical compounds, including terpenes, valepotriates, and some alkaloids. The most common use of this herb is to improve sleep. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) was added because it is often used to reduce anxiety and stress, which can contribute to seizure control. Lavender has a long history of medicinal use and is suggested to possess anticonvulsant, antidepressive, anxiolytic, sedative, and calming properties. It exerts anxiolytic and anticonvulsant actions through GABAergic modulation, glutamate antagonism, and sodium and calcium channel inhibition. Lavender has been prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and migraine attack.

Next, we added in Bacopa. Bacopa has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine for neurological conditions—including epilepsy. t’s considered a nervine tonic, believed to stabilize and rejuvenate the nervous system. Its active compounds, particularly bacosides, appear to modulate neurotransmitters like GABA, which plays a key role in calming neural activity. Bacopa may also help reverse epilepsy-associated changes in the brain, such as altered GABA receptor levels. We also added in our Steep Me Medicinal Mushrooms. Mushrooms are gaining lots of notoriety due to their potential natural anticonvulsants’ capabilities, especially in the realm of complementary therapies for epilepsy and seizure disorders. These mushrooms Contains triterpenoids and polysaccharides with neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. Stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF), supporting neuron repair and regeneration and may reduce inflammation and protect hippocampal neurons during seizures highlighting their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and exert neuroprotective effects. Kava Kava has active compounds called kavalactones, appear to affect the limbic system, which regulates emotions and neurological activity. Kavalactones like kavain and dihydromethysticin may enhance the effects of certain anxiolytic agents and exhibit mild anticonvulsant and antispasmodic effects and these effects are thought to be mediated through non-GABA receptor pathways. Vitamin D3 & K2 were also included. Vitamin D3 because it has a Neuroprotective effect. It upregulates neurotrophic factors like GDNF and NT3, which support neuron survival and function. It has Anti-inflammatory action because it reduces proconvulsant cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α, which are linked to increased seizure susceptibility. Vitamin D helps maintain calcium balance, which is crucial for proper nerve signaling and muscle function. Through its receptor (VDR), vitamin D can influence genes involved in excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. Vitamin K2 was included because anticonvulsants can deplete vitamin K levels, which may lead to complications. Drugs like phenytoin, carbamazepine, primidone, valproic acid, and others can increase oxidative degradation of vitamin K. This depletion may reduce the production of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, increasing the risk of bleeding and Supplementation with vitamin K might be necessary in patients on long-term anticonvulsant therapy to prevent deficiency-related issues.

Manganese has been suggested as a potential anticonvulsant for people with epilepsy. Low blood manganese levels have been observed in people with epilepsy, and reduced manganese availability may affect seizure activity. Manganese is a trace mineral essential for many biological processes, and there’s growing interest in its potential role in neurological health, including epilepsy and seizure disorders. Manganese ions (Mn²⁺) help stabilize neuronal membranes, which may reduce the likelihood of abnormal electrical activity that leads to seizures. Manganese supports enzymes involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and antioxidant defense, which are crucial for brain health, and it may help mitigate oxidative stress and neuroinflammation—both of which are implicated in seizure disorders. Manganese works well when supported by Magnesium and Vitamin B. That is why we included our Steep Me Magnesium Blend and Steep Me Vitamin B Blend. Magnesium has long been recognized for its anticonvulsant properties. It promotes Vasodilation because it relaxes blood vessels, reducing cerebral vasospasm and lowering blood pressure. Blood-brain barrier protection because it may stabilize the barrier and reduce cerebral edema. It has Neuromuscular effects because it inhibits acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions, dampening nerve excitability. Plus, it is a Central nervous system depressant due to its direct calming effect on the brain, which helps prevent convulsions. Vitamin B has shown potential in supporting anticonvulsant therapy, particularly for individuals with epilepsy. Vitamin B is essential for synthesizing neurotransmitters like GABA, which has inhibitory effects on neuronal activity. Low GABA levels are linked to seizures, supports nerve function, and helps maintain the myelin sheath around neurons. Many anticonvulsant medications are known to deplete B vitamins so having a bit extra is always supportive. This depletion can lead to neurological side effects, mood changes, and increased seizure susceptibility. Skullcap was also included. Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is traditionally used to ease nervous tension and support the nervous system that has long been used in herbal medicine for its anticonvulsant and nervine properties. Vitamin E has shown some promise as a supportive therapy for epilepsy, particularly in cases where conventional anticonvulsants are less effective. Vitamin E helps neutralize free radicals, which may reduce oxidative stress in the brain—a factor linked to seizure activity. Tamarind contains polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants that may help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and these compounds have shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, which are relevant in managing neurological disorders like epilepsy. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) because it is an omega-3 fatty acid, has been reported to have anticonvulsant effects. It may play a role in maintaining and modulating neuronal functions and supportive nutrients that may help modulate brain excitability and inflammation. DHA can enhance the anticonvulsant effects of other drugs, such as VPA. DHA plays a key role in brain function and neuronal stability and can increase seizure latency.

Next, we added Jujube. Jujube  has long been used for calming the mind and treating neurological disorders. Jujube helps reduce oxidative stress in brain tissue, which is a key factor in seizure development, and it modulates enzymes like acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), which participate in neurotransmission and may influence seizure activity. Jujube improved memory and learning deficits often associated with epilepsy. Damiana was included because it is a traditional herbal remedy known for its use as an aphrodisiac and mood enhancer and has been used as a nervine tonic, meaning it may support the nervous system and help with conditions like anxiety and mild depression. Damiana contains flavonoids like apigenin, which can bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain. These receptors engage in calming neural activity, which could help reduce seizures. Poria Cocos was added because it has GABA modulation which plays a key role in calming neural activity and preventing seizures. It has Anti-inflammatory effects since Chronic neuroinflammation is linked to seizure disorders. Poria’s triterpenoids and polysaccharides may reduce inflammation in the brain. It has Neuroprotective action since the  Antioxidants in Poria cocos help protect neurons from oxidative stress, which can trigger or worsen seizures. Poria Cocos has synergistic effects: Some research suggests Poria may enhance the effects of sedatives like pentobarbital, potentially extending their calming impact. Cistanche, often dubbed “desert ginseng,” has long been revered in traditional Chinese medicine for its adaptogenic and neuroprotective properties. Modern research shows that Cistanche has benefits related to improved cognitive function, immune system support, healthy aging, and support for sexual wellness. It has anticonvulsant effects by binding with synaptosomal-associated protein (SNAP)-25 and NMDA. Cistanche contains bioactive compounds like echinacoside and acteoside, which have shown promise in protecting neurons from oxidative stress and inflammation—two key contributors to seizure activity. These compounds may help stabilize neural circuits and reduce excitotoxicity, which is often implicated in epilepsy. It may also modulate neurotransmitter systems such as GABA and glutamate, which are central to seizure control. Finally, we included Self-Heal. Self-Heal has  bioactive compounds like rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and flavonoids—have shown neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Rosmarinic acid is Known to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, which are linked to seizure activity. Flavonoids May modulate neurotransmitter systems, particularly the GABAergic system, which plays a key role in seizure control. Triterpenoids like ursolic acid, have shown promise in reducing neuroinflammation.
