Blender’s Notes Alpha Keratin Balance ~ Keratosis Pilaris ~ Micro-Nutrition:

Steep Me Micro-Nutrition combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits from different combinations of Vitamins and Minerals. With this blend we are helping support the amount of Alpha Keratin that the body produces. At times, over production or under production can be hard to manage. What is Alpha Keratin? Alpha-keratin is a crucial protein found in various living organisms, vertebrates. This fibrous protein is essential in providing structural support, strength, and flexibility to the tissues and structures where it is present. Understanding alpha keratin’s properties and functions can illuminate its significance in the animal kingdom and its applications in various fields. Alpha-keratin is a type of keratin protein and is one of the two primary forms of keratin, the other being beta-keratin. It is primarily found in mammals, including humans, as well as in birds and reptiles. The name “keratin” originates from the Greek word “keras,” meaning “horn,” as it was first identified in the structure of horns, hooves, and nails. At the molecular level, alpha keratin comprises long and slender helical filaments. These filaments are formed by the intertwining of polypeptide chains, which consist of several amino acids linked together in a specific sequence. The primary building blocks of alpha-keratin are the amino acids glycine, alanine, serine, and cysteine. Alpha keratin is of immense importance in various biological processes and serves critical functions in humans ~ Structural Integrity: Alpha keratin is vital in maintaining the mechanical integrity of various tissues and appendages. It acts as a scaffold, giving strength and shape to the structures it forms ~ Protection: In the case of soft alpha-keratin, it forms a defensive barrier against environmental factors, such as sunlight and abrasion. It also aids in insulation, regulating body temperature in animals ~ Sensory Receptors: Some structures containing alpha keratin, like feathers and hair, serve as sensory receptors, providing animals tactile feedback and environmental perception ~ Cosmetics and Textiles: Alpha keratin in human hair and nails has led to its application in the cosmetic industry for hair care products and nail treatments. Additionally, wool and silk, which contain alpha keratin, are used to make textiles. What is Alpha-Keratin: Definition, Structure, Types, and More

What is Keratosis Pilaris? Keratosis pilaris is a benign (not harmful) skin condition that looks like small bumps. If you have this condition, you may notice small, painless bumps on your skin around hair follicles. The bumps consist of excess keratin, which is a protein that helps form your hair, nails and skin’s outer layer (epidermis). Keratosis pilaris bumps may look red, brown, or white, or they may look the same color as your skin. Other names for keratosis pilaris include KP or “chicken skin” because it looks like goose bumps. Keratosis pilaris typically appears on your upper arms, but it can also appear on any other part of your body that has hair follicles.  The bumps you see when you have keratosis pilaris are collections of the protein keratin. These bumps are sometimes mistaken for clusters of small pimples. Keratosis pilaris bumps happen when keratin clogs (blocks) your pores instead of flaking off. Your pores are openings in your skin where hairs come through your skin (hair follicles). Keratosis Pilaris: What It Is, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

In this blend we started with Vitamin D3 & K2. These vitamins play a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. Keratinocytes, the main cells in the epidermis, convert vitamin D into its active form, which helps regulate their proliferation and differentiation. Adequate vitamin D levels help maintain the skin’s protective barrier, reducing dryness and irritation. Topical forms of vitamin D (like calcitriol) are used to treat psoriasis, a condition involving excessive keratinocyte growth. Your skin produces vitamin D when exposed to UVB rays, making moderate sun exposure beneficial for skin health. Keratinocytes not only produce keratin but also activate vitamin D. This synergy helps promote healthy skin turnover, reduce inflammation, and enhance wound healing. Both of these Reduces dark circles and bruising by improving blood circulation and strengthening capillaries, Promotes wound healing by accelerating skin repair and minimizing scarring, Improves skin elasticity by supporting collagen synthesis, which helps reduce sagging and wrinkles, Alleviates spider veins and redness, making it useful in creams for rosacea or sensitive skin.  Next, we added in Maca Root. Maca root, a Peruvian superfood, is known for its hormone-balancing and anti-inflammatory properties. Maca stimulates the endocrine system, which may help regulate hormones that influence skin conditions like acne and dryness. Maca root extracts have shown anti-inflammatory benefits, which could help reduce skin irritation. Maca contains antioxidants that may protect skin from oxidative stress and aging and may help balance oil production, which is useful for acne-prone skin. Steep Me Medicinal Mushrooms were included because they have long been used in traditional medicine for their immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Mushrooms are packed with bioactive compounds that support skin health from the inside out and outside . Some varieties may offer supportive benefits for skin health, including conditions like keratosis. This blend of mushrooms can calm inflammation, supports immune function, may aid skin healing, promotes nerve regeneration, may support skin repair, are rich in polysaccharides, supports immune response and may aid in cancer care, they are antioxidant powerhouses which may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and boosts energy and oxygen utilization while all may support skin vitality.

Next, we added Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha was included because it can help combat oxidative stress, which can contribute to skin issues like rough patches and pigmentation, it may soothe skin inflammation and support healing in conditions like eczema and psoriasis and is used in skincare products to hydrate and improve skin texture. It can also help calm redness, irritation, and flare-ups from conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea, Ashwagandha stimulates collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and reducing fine lines, rich in antioxidants, it protects skin cells from free radical damage that leads to premature aging, it may help reduce excess sebum and prevent breakouts due to its stress reducing qualities, it promotes an even skin tone and helps fade hyperpigmentation and it Hydrates and heals.  Mucuna Pruriens was included because it has high L-DOPA content—a precursor to dopamine. It has been studied for potential benefits in Parkinson’s disease, male infertility, mood disorders, and even as a natural aphrodisiac and great for skin. This herb helps tighten the appearance of pores and reduce excess surface oil, making it useful for oily or combination skin. Rich in amino acids and antioxidants, it supports a healthy moisture barrier and improves skin texture, and Its antioxidant content may help combat free radicals, which contribute to skin aging. Next, we added Black Cumin. Black Cumin is often praised in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, due to its active compound thymoquinone. Black Cumin can have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects may soothe irritation or dryness with Keratosis Pilaris. Black cumin seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids, which help reinforce the skin barrier and improve elasticity. It also contains vitamin E, which protects the skin from free radical damage and promotes the regeneration of healthy skin cells. The oil has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help soothe skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Additionally, black cumin seed oil nourishes and protects the skin, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion. It also locks in moisture and keeps the skin hydrated, with natural emollient properties that keep the skin soft and smooth. Red Ginseng was added because it has shown promising effects on various skin conditions. Red Ginseng may reduce inflammation in skin cells, which could help with conditions like keratosis that involve irritation or immune response, it can suppress certain immune signals in keratinocytes (skin cells), potentially calming overactive skin responses, red ginseng improved skin hydration and reduced water loss, which might benefit dry, scaly keratosis-prone skin, and the antioxidant properties may support overall skin health and resilience.  Red ginseng has been shown to influence keratinocyte behavior, including reducing inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and IL-8. Some active compounds in ginseng may promote healthy keratinocyte proliferation, which could be relevant for conditions like actinic keratosis or seborrheic keratosis. He Shou Wou was added to help with promoting healthy blood flow, reducing stress and anxiety, and restoring hair color and growth. Then we added Arabinogalactan. Arabinogalactan acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and helping maintain hydration, stimulates collagen production, which enhances skin firmness and reduces fine lines, Shields skin from free radicals, helping prevent premature aging, Forms a protective film on the skin, reducing trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) and locking in moisture, enhances the performance of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), promoting smoother skin with less irritation and acts as a prebiotic, supporting beneficial skin bacteria for a healthier skin environment.

Next, we added Calcium to address any Calcium deficiencies which can make Alpha Keratosis conditions worsen! Calcium regulates how quickly your skin sheds old cells and generates new ones, keeping your complexion fresh and vibrant, it helps produce sebum, a natural oil that locks in hydration. Without enough calcium, skin can become dry, flaky, and irritated, calcium supports the skin’s outer layer (epidermis), helping it stay strong against environmental stressors like pollution and harsh weather, it may reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging by maintaining skin thickness and elasticity and because Low calcium levels have been linked to eczema and psoriasis, and boosting calcium intake may help manage these conditions.  Iron is essential for healthy skin, but both deficiency and overload can cause skin issues where Iron deficiency may lead to dry skin, brittle nails, and pruritus (itchiness), which can worsen conditions like keratosis pilaris. Slippery Elm is a traditional herbal remedy known for its soothing properties. Its anti-inflammatory and protective effects may create a healthier environment for skin cells to thrive. Its mucilage content forms a gel-like substance that can calm inflammation and irritation when applied topically. Steep Me Vitamin B Blend was added because it helps your body metabolize fats and proteins, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails. It is often included in supplements aimed at improving keratin structure and boosts the skin’s barrier function, improves texture, and reduces inflammation. Horseradish has long been used in traditional medicine for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-cleansing properties. While it is not a scientifically proven treatment for keratosis, some natural remedy enthusiasts have explored its potential benefits. Vitamin A was also added because it contains Retinoids (a form of vitamin A) help shed old skin cells and generate new ones, keeping your skin smooth and fresh. It boosts collagen production  which helps reduce wrinkles and improve elasticity. Vitamin A unclogs pores and calms irritated skin which Fights acne and inflammation. Vitamin A also improves skin tone by fading out dark spots and evens out pigmentation. Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin, packed with fulvic acid, humic acid, and over 80 trace minerals, has been linked to several skin-enhancing benefits. It was also included because of its ability to boost collagen production and improve nutrient delivery to skin cells may indirectly support keratin health by enhancing the skin’s overall resilience and texture.

Vitamin C is next because it plays a surprisingly powerful and key role in maintaining skin health and promoting keratinocyte differentiation. It activates genes essential for epidermal renewal, potentially thickening the skin and restoring its function. Vitamin C also supports the influence of keratinocytes, the cells responsible for producing keratin, the protein that gives skin its strength and resilience and helps protect the skin from oxidative stress. Other benefits of vitamin C for skin include boosting collagen production, reducing dark spots, protecting against sun damage, promoting wound healing, and keeping the skin hydrated. Vitamin C stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, which are the primary cells in the epidermis. This leads to a thicker, healthier skin barrier. It supports enzymes called TETs that demethylate DNA, reactivating genes involved in cell growth and regeneration. This process helps rejuvenate aging or damaged skin. Studies using 3D human skin models showed that vitamin C treatment significantly increased epidermal thickness by enhancing keratinocyte activity. Beyond keratin, vitamin C also helps synthesize collagen, reduces UV damage, and prevents melanin buildup, making it a multitasking skin ally. We also added Gynostemma. Gynostemma is a plant that supplies antioxidants and enzymes to counteract oxidative stress and promote heart, metabolic, and respiratory health. It may also function as an adaptogen to increase energy and fight fatigue, keeping the body in top shape! Gynostemma stimulates collagen production by activating fibroblasts, helping to firm the skin and reduce wrinkles. Rich in flavonoids and saponins, it neutralizes free radicals and protects skin cells from oxidative stress caused by UV rays and pollution, it calms irritated skin by inhibiting inflammatory mediators like cytokines, making it ideal for acne-prone or sensitive skin, Polysaccharides in the extract help retain moisture and form a protective barrier, especially beneficial for dry skin and it may help balance oil production, which is useful for oily or combination skin types.  Lodhra was added because it is a revered herb in Ayurveda, known for its anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties. Lodhra helps tighten skin and reduce excess oil, which may support skin health and reduce irritation. Useful in calming inflamed or irritated skin, which is often a symptom in keratosis. Lodhra can be used to promote healing of ulcers and skin lesions and may help protect skin cells from oxidative stress, which contributes to abnormal skin growth. We also included N-Acetylcysteine because it is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that has been explored for various dermatological uses. NAC boosts glutathione levels, helping reduce oxidative stress in skin cells, it may inhibit inflammatory pathways like NF-kB and reduce cytokine activity, and it has been shown to promote skin cell proliferation and migration, which could aid in healing damaged skin. Finally, we added Selenium. Selenium helps neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that damage skin cells and accelerate aging. It calms redness and swelling, making it beneficial for conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Selenium promotes collagen production, which helps maintain skin firmness and reduce wrinkles. It protects against damage from ultraviolet radiation, potentially lowering the risk of skin cancer. By regulating sebum production and boosting glutathione (a detoxifying antioxidant), selenium can help prevent breakouts.
