Many women have menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods. For some women, the discomfort is merely annoying. For others, menstrual cramps can be severe enough to interfere with everyday activities for a few days every month. Conditions such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids can cause menstrual cramps. Treating the cause is key to reducing the pain. Menstrual cramps that are not caused by another condition tend to lessen with age and often improve after giving birth. During your menstrual period, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining. Hormonelike substances (prostaglandins) involved in pain and inflammation trigger the uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more-severe menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps can be caused by: Endometriosis. Tissue that acts like the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, most commonly on fallopian tubes, ovaries or the tissue lining your pelvis. Uterine fibroids. These noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus can cause pain. Adenomyosis. The tissue that lines your uterus begins to grow into the muscular walls of the uterus. Pelvic inflammatory disease. Sexually transmitted bacteria usually cause this infection of the female reproductive organs. Cervical stenosis. In some women, the opening of the cervix is small enough to impede menstrual flow, causing a painful increase of pressure within the uterus. Menstrual cramps – Symptoms & causes – Mayo Clinic
In this blend we started with Cramp Bark. Cramp Bark derived from the plant Viburnum opulus, is a traditional herbal remedy known for its antispasmodic properties, making it particularly effective for relieving menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). Cramp bark contains compounds like methyl salicylate, which have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. This makes it useful for easing the muscle spasms associated with menstrual cramps. Agrimony was also added for its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties might help reduce menstrual pain and discomfort. Marjoram was added because it has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties that can help reduce the pain associated with menstrual cramps. It helps relax the muscles, which can alleviate the cramping and discomfort during menstruation. Marjoram has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammation in the uterus, further easing menstrual pain. Marjoram may help regulate menstrual cycles and restore hormonal balance, which can be beneficial for women with irregular periods. Corydalis because it is an effective analgesic, sedative, and hypnotic, useful in the treatment of headache, insomnia, and dysmenorrhea. Thus, it is especially applicable for the treatment of headache and migraine associated with menstruation, and general menstrual pain. California Poppy was added because it is known for its calming and mild pain-relieving properties and it is often used to promote relaxation and improve sleep, it also has potential benefits for managing pain, including menstrual pain or dysmenorrhea. The plant contains alkaloids that interact with GABA receptors in the brain, which can help reduce pain and promote relaxation and its general pain-relieving properties suggest it might offer some relief. Strawberry leaf was added because it contains iron, which can help combat anemia and support overall menstrual health. Additionally, strawberry leaves have been traditionally used to alleviate menstrual issues due to their diuretic properties and ability to stimulate metabolism.
Next, we also included Chaste Berry. Chaste Berry can help with menstrual issues, including dysmenorrhea (painful periods). It works by influencing hormone levels, particularly by reducing prolactin and balancing estrogen and progesterone. Chasteberry has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce menstrual pain. By regulating hormones, it can alleviate symptoms associated with menstrual irregularities. It may also help with mood swings and other PMS symptoms. Helichrysum is known for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which can be beneficial for managing dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods). Helichrysum oil can help reduce muscle spasms and inflammation. Mug wort is believed to help alleviate menstrual cramps by relaxing the uterus. It may help in regulating menstrual cycles and bringing on menstruation in cases of irregular periods. Mug wort might support hormonal balance, which can be beneficial for overall reproductive health. Lady’s mantle is known for its ability to reduce menstrual cramps and discomfort. The herb contains tannins and salicylic acid, which have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It can help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, making it beneficial for those with irregular periods. The herb is rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and support overall health. Shepard’s Purse was included because it can help managing heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea (painful periods). It is known for its ability to slow bleeding and has been used historically to treat excessive menstrual bleeding. Finally, we included Mangosteen. Mangosteen contains xanthones, a type of antioxidant that may help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. The xanthones and fiber in mangosteen may reduce inflammation, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes plus fantastic for your skin health. The high vitamin C content supports the immune system, helping the body fight off infections. The fiber in mangosteen aids in digestion and promotes a healthy gut and the antioxidants in mangosteen may have anti-cancer properties.
