Blender’s Notes Pain Management:
Steep Me Self Help Tea combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. This combination of herbs helps with managing pain. Pain Management Tea is not about pain elimination, experiencing/feeling pain is a part of life and important to the human body if there is a problem. With this blend we are after healthy management of acute and long-term pain. Pain is described as an uncomfortable feeling your body sends to your brain when something is wrong. Pain can be described in many ways; common descriptors include steady throbbing, stabbing, aching, or pinching. There are two diverse types of pain, acute pain, and chronic pain. Acute pain occurs quickly and goes away when it is resolved. Chronic pain is pain that has continued to occur for over three months and is usually the result of dysfunction within the body. Chronic pain is typically associated with elevated levels of inflammation (i.e., arthritis). Over 100 million people in the US suffer from chronic pain syndrome and many of the conventional therapies are known to cause further problems, such as opioid addiction. Other symptoms and issues that may arise from chronic pain include: ~ Nausea ~ Weakness ~ Anger ~ Depression ~ Irritability ~ Dizziness ~ Fatigue. Pain often varies from person to person and can come in many different forms. Types of pain are grouped into categories based on the location and cause of the pain. Categories include:
~~Neuropathic
~~Nociceptive (actual tissue injury)
~~Musculoskeletal
~~Inflammatory
~~Psychogenic
~~Mechanical (malignant expansion)
Some of the most shared areas of chronic pain are in the lower back, joints, feet and hands, and head (headaches). The Best Herbs for Natural Pain Relief (verywellhealth.com)
In this blend we started with California Poppy showed promising results for managing chronic pain and pain-related insomnia. The alkaloids studied were protopine, californidine, escholtzine, and sanguinarine. California poppy extract may be supportive for reducing acute and chronic pain in cases such as osteoarthritis and sciatic nerve pain. It should be noted that California poppy is non-addictive. WE also included Kratom. Kratom stimulates the opioid receptors, which function as a gateway for pain signals heading towards the brain. It inhibits COX-2, which is an enzyme that creates inflammatory messengers that cause pain. It relaxes the muscle fibers to alleviate muscle-related pain & tension. Kratom’s alkaloid receptors bind effectively with pain receptors in the human body, causing relief from fibromyalgia. The alkaloids in kratom regulate opioid receptor activity, blocking pain signals before they are transmitted to the brain. Ginger is one of the best natural herbs for inflammation and pain relief. Gingerol and shogaol appear to be the active constituents responsible for ginger’s anti-inflammatory effects and reduce inflammation markers in the body. Cinnamon Chips added to address inflammatory and gastrointestinal issues. This herb has antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumor, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, gastroprotective, and immunomodulatory properties. Evidence suggests cinnamon can be used to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress levels. Next, Dandelion Root is known for aiding digestion, regulating blood sugar, and protecting the liver, but less known is its anti-inflammatory effects. Due to dandelion’s antioxidant levels, it may help improve the immune system, shrink liver fibrosis, and reduce inflammation. Astragalus was added because it may be beneficial for pain reduction and can significantly reduce pain, stiffness, knee swelling, and arthritis symptoms. Peppermint has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pain-relieving effects. The active compounds in peppermint oil include carvacrol, menthol, and limonene. It can help to relieve painful spasms and problems associated with arthritis. Peppermint is purported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and anti-fatigue properties. This herb is especially helpful for inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract because of its ability to relax smooth muscle.
Kava Kava is best known for its ability to relax the central nervous system and lesser known for its significant anti-inflammatory effects. This herb contains a compound called kava-241 which may help manage inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. It reduced an inflammatory signaling protein known as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) within inflamed joints and showed that kava kava has a positive effect on neurodegenerative diseases. White Willow was also included because it contains an aspirin-like compound known as salicin, white willow bark has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for inflammation and pain. Taking willow bark may be as effective as taking conventional anti-inflammatory medications for the relief of knee pain and musculoskeletal pain. In addition to salicin, willow bark contains chemicals called polyphenols and flavonoids. These plant compounds are an important part of a healthy diet because they support basic body functions. They also have been shown to significantly reduce inflammation. The combination of material in willow bark makes it effective at treating headache, easing muscle pain, and calming inflammation. White willow bark may also alleviate acute back pain, joint pain, and osteoarthritis. Yellow Dock is used for pain and swelling (inflammation) of nasal passages and the respiratory tract, and as a laxative and tonic. It is also used to treat bacterial infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Boldo Leaf has anti-inflammatory properties and is promoted for health conditions like achy joints (rheumatism) and similar forms of muscle pain and inflammation. Black Cumin was added because its healing power comes from its main component, Thymoquinone, which demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it helps reduce swelling and treats immune responses. It is also known to be antinociceptive (i.e., “analgesic), meaning it can help with pain management. Corydalis is a natural remedy for pain relief that is often used in traditional Chinese medicine. It contains tetrahydropalmatine (THP), which interacts with dopamine to reduce sensations of pain and could help alleviate moderate chronic pain. Corydalis may also help you relax and combat addictions and is praised for its ability to reduce pain from osteoarthritis, digestive issues, and nerve damage.
Helichrysum is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It can be used to alleviate pain associated with various conditions, such as sore muscles, injuries, and chronic pain conditions. The main compound is called Nerol, has neuro-protective effects and reduces the loss of dopamine-producing neurons. Additionally, helichrysum’s antimicrobial properties may help kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can cause infections. Brahmi treats various inflammatory disorders, such as joint and respiratory ailments. It helps reduce swelling, pain, and other associated discomforts in the respiratory tract and enhances the healthy functioning of the respiratory system. Licorice Root was included for the management of inflammatory diseases. Licorice extract has anti-inflammatory properties, specifically because of its ability to decrease free radicals. Licorice has also been shown to stimulate digestive function, reduce coughing, lessen phlegm production, and alleviate pain. Impressively, licorice has been found to decrease inflammatory markers in the joints and protect against acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, including the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. Self-Heal contains flavonoids, tannins, and ursolic, rosmarinic, and oleanolic acids, which may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well as pain management. Burdock Root is used to aid in digestion and relieve inflammation. Burdock root has been found to improve inflammation levels and oxidative stress due to its antioxidant levels. This herb has been shown to be a natural and effective antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Marjoram is an herb originating from Spain that is known for its therapeutic antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Marjoram has impressively elevated levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Borage is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which has been shown to reduce joint pain and inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Borage oil has also been studied for its potential to improve skin health and reduce symptoms of atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition that causes red, itchy rashes. And finally, we included Milk Thistle. Milk Thistle contains silymarin and is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antitumor, and immune system regulating effects. Silymarin has been found to be well tolerated with no major side effects other than mild gastrointestinal reactions.
