Blender’s Notes Gout – WIP:
Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love for you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working. All our teas go through a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination. Once we have 100 people or more evaluating the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.
This combination of herbs helps build to help maintain the symptoms of Gout. Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe. An attack of gout can occur suddenly, often waking you up in the middle of the night with the sensation that your big toe is on fire. The affected joint is hot, swollen and so tender that even the weight of the bed sheet on it may seem intolerable. The signs and symptoms of gout always occur suddenly, and often at night. They include Intense joint pain. Gout usually affects the big toe, but it can occur in any joint. Other commonly affected joints include the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. The pain is likely to be most severe within the first four to 12 hours after it begins. Lingering discomfort. After the most severe pain subsides, some joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks. Later attacks are likely to last longer and affect more joints. Inflammation and redness. The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender, warm and red. Limited range of motion. As gout progresses, you may not be able to move your joints normally. Gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate in your joint, causing inflammation and intense pain of a gout attack. Urate crystals can form when you have elevated levels of uric acid in your blood. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines — substances that are found naturally in your body. Purines are also found in certain foods, including red meat and organ meats, such as liver. Purine-rich seafood includes anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, trout, and tuna. Alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) promote higher levels of uric acid. Normally, uric acid dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. But sometimes either your body produces too much uric acid, or your kidneys excrete too little uric acid. When this happens, uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needlelike urate crystals in a joint or surrounding tissue that cause pain, inflammation, and swelling. You are more likely to develop gout if you have elevated levels of uric acid in your body. Factors that increase the uric acid level in your body include Diet. Eating a diet rich in red meat and shellfish and drinking beverages sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) increase levels of uric acid, which increase your risk of gout. Alcohol consumption, especially beer, also increases the risk of gout. Weight. If you are overweight, your body produces more uric acid, and your kidneys have a tougher time eliminating uric acid. Medical conditions. Certain diseases and conditions increase your risk of gout. These include untreated high blood pressure and chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and heart and kidney diseases. Certain medications. Low-dose aspirin and some medications used to control hypertension — including thiazide diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and beta blockers — also can increase uric acid levels. So can the use of anti-rejection drugs prescribed for people who have undergone an organ transplant. Family history of gout. If other members of your family have had gout, you are more likely to develop the disease. Age and sex. Gout occurs more often in men, primarily because women tend to have lower uric acid levels. After menopause, however, women’s uric acid levels approach those of men. Men are also more likely to develop gout earlier — usually between the ages of 30 and 50 — whereas women develop signs and symptoms after menopause. Recent surgery or trauma. Experiencing recent surgery or trauma can sometimes trigger a gout attack. In some people, receiving a vaccination can trigger a gout flare. Gout – Symptoms and causes – Mayo Clinic
In this blend we combined Alfalfa. Alfalfa helps neutralize and reduce high uric acid levels in the blood, which can prevent gout attacks. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation and pain associated with gout. Alfalfa contains antioxidants that protect the body from oxidative stress and damage and is a reliable source of vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, and K, as well as minerals like iron, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Hibiscus was added to help reduce the Uric Acid in the body. Lemon peel because it contains compounds that can help lower uric acid levels in the blood, which is beneficial for preventing gout attacks. The peel is rich in antioxidants that protect the body from oxidative stress and damage plus it is a reliable source of vitamin C, which can help reduce inflammation and support overall health. Parsley because it helps increase urine production, which can help flush out excess uric acid from the body. Parsley contains compounds like luteolin and apigenin, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation associated with gout. Parsley may inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which participates in uric acid production. We added ginger which is a pain aid for Uric Acid in the body and an anti-inflammatory. We also included Milk Thistle. The main active ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin, a flavonoid that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Milk thistle may help to protect the liver and kidney cells from damage caused by uric acid crystals. Milk thistle may also help to manage type 2 diabetes and heart health, which are common risk factors for gout. Turmeric was added to help eliminate the crystal formation through the body. Its most active chemical, curcumin, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This may help ease gout-related inflammation and pain.
Next, we included Burdock. Burdock’s anti-inflammatory properties can help with providing pain relief from gout attacks as well as prevent uric acid induced inflammation in future gout flare-ups. Next, we added Cleavers. Cleavers function as a diuretic, helping to flush out toxins and excess fluid from the kidneys. This can prevent systemic water retention and reduce the formation of kidney stones. Cleavers have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body and it supports the immune system, helping the body fight off infections that can exacerbate gout symptoms. Couch grass acts as a diuretic, increasing urine output and helping to clear excess uric acid from the body. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation associated with gout. Couch grass supports kidney health, which is important for managing uric acid levels and preventing gout attacks. Dandelion was included because it acts as a diuretic, increasing urine production and helping to flush out excess uric acid from the body. Dandelion has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation associated with gout and helps detoxify the liver and gallbladder, which can improve overall health and reduce uric acid levels. The antioxidants in dandelion help protect the body from oxidative stress and damage. Meadowsweet because it contains salicylic acid, which helps reduce inflammation and pain associated with gout. It has analgesic properties that can help alleviate joint pain. Celery Seed was included because it helps with treating chronic pain. In addition, they are also useful for removing acidic metabolites from the body. Next, we added English Ivy. English Ivy contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce inflammation associated with gout. It has been used to alleviate joint pain and swelling, which are common symptoms of gout.
Horsetail was included because it is a natural diuretic that can lead to increased urine production are what make horsetail an ideal addition in tea for gout. An increase output of urine can help flush the kidneys and rid the body of toxins, and the additional antibiotic effects further its medicinal benefits. Horsetail has been regarded as a useful herb for gout prevention and as such it makes its way regularly into herbal tea recipes for this purpose. It is important to note however that horsetail should not be used in people with past or current conditions related to kidney disease or kidney function. Corydalis is known for its pain-relieving properties, which can help manage pain associated with gout. It contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce inflammation in the body and has sedative properties that can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Stinging Nettles is one of few herbs with evidence to amplify the elimination of gout causing uric acid, making it an almost essential addition to tea for gout. Next, we added Fennel. Fennel contains anethole, a compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These properties may help reduce inflammation in the joints and alleviate gout symptoms. Additionally, fennel seeds also have diuretic properties, which means they can increase urine production and promote the elimination of uric acid from the body. Finally, we added Devil’s Claw. Devil’s Claw is known as the best of all herbs for gout. It is a strong and powerful herb that has anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and analgesic properties. The herb devil’s claw root reduces uric acid levels by assisting the body to excrete toxic waste and thereby reduces gout inflammation and pain.
