Blender’s Notes Hashimoto – WIP:
Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love for you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working. All our teas go through a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination. Once we have one hundred people or more evaluating the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.
This combination of herbs helps build to help balance your thyroid from the inflammation and reduction in hormones it is producing. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck just below Adam’s apple. The thyroid produces hormones that help regulate many functions in the body. An autoimmune disorder is an illness caused by the immune system attacking healthy tissues. In Hashimoto’s disease, immune-system cells lead to the death of the thyroid’s hormone-producing cells. The disease usually results in a decline in hormone production (hypothyroidism). Although anyone can develop Hashimoto’s disease, it’s most common among middle-aged women. The primary treatment is thyroid hormone replacement. Hashimoto’s disease is also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Hashimoto’s disease has progressed slowly over the years. You may not notice signs or symptoms of the disease. Eventually, the decline in thyroid hormone production can result in any of the following: Fatigue and sluggishness Increased sensitivity to cold Increased sleepiness Dry skin Constipation Muscle weakness Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness Joint pain and stiffness Irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding Depression Problems with memory or concentration Swelling of the thyroid (goiter) A puffy face Brittle nails Hair loss Enlargement of the tongue. The immune system creates antibodies that attack thyroid cells as if they were bacteria, viruses, or some other foreign body. The immune system wrongly enlists disease-fighting agents that damage cells and lead to cell death. Thyroid hormones are essential for the healthy function of many body systems. Therefore, when Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism are left untreated, many complications can occur. These include Goiter. Goiter is enlargement of the thyroid. As thyroid hormone production declines due to Hashimoto’s disease, the thyroid receives signals from the pituitary gland to make more. This cycle may result in a goiter. It is not comfortable, but a large goiter can affect your appearance and may interfere with swallowing or breathing. Heart problems. Hypothyroidism can result in poor heart function, an enlarged heart, and irregular heartbeats. It can also result in elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the “bad” cholesterol — that is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Mental health issues. Depression or other mental health disorders may occur early in Hashimoto’s disease and may become more severe over time. Sexual and reproductive dysfunction. In women, hypothyroidism can result in a reduced sexual desire (libido), an inability to ovulate, and irregular and excessive menstrual bleeding. Men with hypothyroidism may have a reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and a lowered sperm count. Poor pregnancy outcomes. Hypothyroidism during pregnancy may increase the risk of a miscarriage or preterm birth. Babies born to women with untreated hypothyroidism are at risk for decreased intellectual abilities, autism, speech delays and other developmental disorders. Myxedema (miks-uh-DEE-muh). This rare, life-threatening condition can develop due to long-term, severe, untreated hypothyroidism. Its signs and symptoms include drowsiness followed by profound lethargy and unconsciousness. A myxedema coma may be triggered by exposure to colds, sedatives, infection, or other stress on your body. Myxedema requires immediate emergency medical treatment. We based this blend on our Zhen Green Tea and Aged and Ripe Fermented Puerh Tea. Green tea contains polyphenols, particularly catechins like EGCG, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce thyroid inflammation. The antioxidants in green tea help protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress and damage. Green tea can help modulate the immune system, potentially reducing autoimmune responses and it may activate thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme important for thyroid hormone production. Pu-erh tea contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation. Pu-erh tea supports liver health by promoting efficient toxin elimination and improving metabolic function and it enhances the abundance of beneficial gut microbiota, which can positively impact overall health and immune function. Rhodiola was included because it is an adrenal adaptogen that helps your body balance its stress response. We added our Steep Me Seaweed Blend because they are rich in iodine, which is essential for thyroid hormone production. Seaweed contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation and are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress and damage. Turmeric has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral activity, all of which can provide benefits to those suffering from Hashimoto’s-related symptoms. It is great for detoxifying various metals and toxins, too. We added Milk Thistle to promote a healthy liver, and it can be helpful for those who have liver damage related to an autoimmune disorder. Holy Basil was also included because it helps the body adapt to stress, which is beneficial for managing autoimmune conditions. It contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation and are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress and damage. Holy Basil also supports the immune system, helping to balance immune responses.
Sage was added to help improve Hashimoto’s because of their role in stabilizing the HPA axis. Thyroid hormone production is one of the byproducts of this axis. When the HPA axis is thrown off, it can cause interference with T3 and T4 production. Dandelion contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation. Dandelion helps balance the immune system, which is crucial for managing autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s disease. Dandelion supports liver health by promoting efficient toxin elimination, which can improve overall health and reduce thyroid antibodies. Next, we added Garlic. Garlic has some powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help kill bad bacteria and the Epstein-Barr virus that can contribute to Hashimoto’s development. Garlic can help to decrease proinflammatory cytokines and suppress nuclear factor kappa B, which are both factors in autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease. Garlic benefits those people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, because it is a Th1 dominant condition. Borage was included because it has GLA and has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce thyroid inflammation. Borage can help balance the immune system, which is crucial for managing autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s disease. Ashwagandha is a popular apoptogenic herb that has adaptogenic and anti-stress properties, along with being neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and analgesic at a normalizing thyroid hormone level.
Shatavari because it helps the body adapt to stress, which is beneficial for managing autoimmune conditions. It contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation and are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress and damage. It supports hormonal balance, which can be helpful for managing thyroid-related symptoms. Nettles contain compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce thyroid inflammation, it help balance the immune system, which is crucial for managing autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s disease and nettles have antihistamine properties that can help reduce histamine levels, which may be beneficial for those with histamine intolerance often associated with Hashimoto’s. And finally, we added White Ginseng. Hashimoto suffers tend to have weak adrenals, which frequently is caused by chronic stress. Ginseng does a wonderful job of helping the person adapt to stress, and it also helps to boost the immune system. Most people can take this supplement long term, if necessary, which is a good thing, as frequently it will take at least a few months to fully recover from severe adrenal problems.
