Blender’s Notes Mastitis ~ Plugged Milk Duct Compress:
Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a fantastic way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. In this combination of herbs, we really wanted to offer a blend that will help the breast with inflammation, pain, and swelling from an unhappy milk duct. Mastitis is swelling and redness, called inflammation, of breast tissue. It sometimes involves an infection. Besides causing swelling and redness, mastitis causes breast pain and warmth. An infection can also cause fever and chills. Mastitis most often affects people who are breastfeeding. This is called lactation mastitis. But mastitis can happen to people who are not breastfeeding. Symptoms of mastitis can appear suddenly. They may be in one or both breasts. Symptoms may include Breast tenderness or warmth. Breast swelling. Thickening of breast tissue, or a breast lump. Pain or a burning feeling all the time or while breastfeeding. Skin redness, often in a wedge-shaped pattern. The redness may be harder to see on Black or brown skin. Feeling ill. Fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius) or greater. Milk that is trapped in the breast is the main cause of mastitis. Other causes include: A blocked milk duct. If a breast does not empty all the way during feedings, one of the milk ducts can get clogged. Then milk backs up, leading to breast infection. Germs going into the breast. Germs from the skin’s surface and baby’s mouth can enter the milk ducts. This can happen through a crack in the skin of the nipple or through a milk duct opening. Germs can grow in milk that stays in a breast that is not emptied. Mastitis that is not treated or that is due to a blocked duct can cause pus to build up in the breast. This is called an abscess. An abscess most often needs to be drained surgically. Mastitis – Symptoms and causes – Mayo Clinic
This blend contains Calendula Flowers. Calendula can be used to provide relief from pain and inflammation while supporting the body’s healing process. Calendula contains compounds like flavonoids and triterpenoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce breast inflammation. Calendula has antimicrobial effects that can help fight off infections, which is beneficial for treating mastitis. Calendula promotes wound healing, which can help the affected breast tissue recover more quickly. Next, we added Marshmallow root because it contains mucilage, which has anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce breast inflammation and can help soothe irritated and inflamed breast tissue, providing relief from discomfort. Especially effective when used with Calendula. Next, we added Mullein and Slippery Elm because they also go hand in hand in their combined healing. They both contain compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce breast inflammation and mucilage, which coats mucous membranes and reduces inflammation, providing relief from discomfort. We also included Chamomile. Chamomile is sometimes called an “herbal aspirin” since it has been a popular home remedy for lowering pain for centuries. Chamomile flowers can help reduce pain, swelling and redness. The flavonoids and essential oils of Chamomile can penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers of the skin removing the infection and increasing your immune defenses. As a traditional medicine, it has been used for centuries to treat wounds, ulcers, eczema, gout, skin irritations, bruises, burns and canker sores.
Next, we added Burdock. Burdock root contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce breast inflammation. It also has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections, including those that cause mastitis. Burdock root supports lymphatic circulation, which can help reduce swelling and promote healing. Yarrow was added because it is used to relieve pain and calm inflammation in the breasts caused by mastitis. It has antiseptic properties that help fight off the infection and treat the condition. Yarrow is also helpful for sore, cracked nipples and can soothe and heal. Comfrey because it contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce breast inflammation and promote tissue repair and healing, which can help the affected breast tissue recover more quickly. The high content of antioxidants, as well as vitamin C, makes comfrey pastes and salves the ideal solution for speeding up the healing of wounds. Antioxidants also help eliminate foreign substances in the body and preventing cell death, while vitamin C’s importance in producing collagen means that it is necessary to produce new skin cells for healing. Finally, we added Lavender. Lavender contains compounds like linalool and linalyl acetate, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce breast inflammation. Lavender has antimicrobial effects that can fight off infections, which is beneficial for treating mastitis and can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with mastitis. Remember that this is a compress only. Please do not ingest this combination. Many of these herbs can influence breast milk production and should not be consumed.

When talking about the many types of tea, Tisane (Herbal Infusion) or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is really not tea at all. It is made like a tea and all the same items are used to make it, but it does not contain the Camellia Sinensis Plant (unless stated), but is simply roots, flowers, leaves, and fruits put together is a combination that is made just like a tea. With that being said…the health benefits of a Tisane or Herbal teas are different. They can vary depending on the ingredients and combination of herbs so there are no blanket health benefits – just depends on the ingredients.
For many, the best part of Tisane or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is the fact that it is caffeine free naturally. Of course there are herbs that can be added to change that. The most popular Herbal teas include Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, and any combination of fruit blends or infusions. Our Self-Help Teas are simply supplemental herbal combinations to aid with an occasional ailment specific to what may be happening in your life. The teas are built to work and are not build with any specific flavorings. The blends are tested to the minimum requirements laid out by Steep Me A Cup of Tea. The taste provided is natural to the herbs present in the blend. No flavorings added.
