Blender’s Notes Progesterone Reduction ~ WIP:
Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love for you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working. All our teas go through a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination. Once we have 100 people or more evaluating the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.
This blend is meant to help with elevated levels of Progesterone and to naturally reduce them and become more balanced. Progesterone is a female sex hormone that regulates the reproductive system. Progesterone is a hormone that plays a key role in your menstrual cycle and pregnancy. It is natural that your levels of progesterone fluctuate during the month as your body prepares for ovulation and menstruation. If you become pregnant, levels of progesterone will be higher during the term of pregnancy. The correct levels of progesterone must also be in the right balance with estrogen to regulate your menstrual cycle. Abnormally elevated levels of progesterone can be caused by abnormalities in your menstrual cycle, dysfunction with your adrenal glands, or being under too much stress. Some of the warning signs that your progesterone levels are constantly too high are fatigue, difficulty losing weight, and decreased sex drive. Your menstrual cycle and health are regulated by an intricate balance of hormones. Therefore, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons why you might have too much progesterone. High progesterone symptoms include breast swelling and tenderness, bloating, and other symptoms like anxiety, agitation, or depression. Your progesterone levels naturally rise during pregnancy and after ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovaries.
In this blend we started with Black Cumin. Black Cumin or Nigella Seeds have medicinal properties, as they contain thymoquinone — a type of phytonutrient, or plant compound. Researchers are investigating nigella seed’s protective and therapeutic effects in those living with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a disorder associated with abnormal hormone levels, among other symptoms, in women of reproductive age. In animal studies, nigella seed extracts have helped regulate insulin, testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and thyroid hormone levels, among others. And it exhibits estrogenic activity, meaning it acts similarly to the hormone estrogen in your body. Next, we included Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha also known as winter cherry, Indian ginseng, or Withania somnifera, is an evergreen shrub from the nightshade family and it is highly regarded in herbal medicine. This adaptogen is thought to help your body overcome stress by moderating the brain’s hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis produces and releases multiple hormones — including cortisol — that initiate your body’s response to stress, and it can help with insulin levels, and reproductive hormones. Black Cohosh was added because it has been and is used to support women’s health issues like menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and symptoms of menopause. Black cohosh might function as a phytoestrogen — a plant substance that acts similarly to the hormone estrogen when ingested and it can help relieve symptoms of menopause. Next, we included Wild Yam. Wild Yam contains a chemical called diosgenin, which can influence the production of several useful hormones in humans, such as estrogen or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Consuming wild yam may be a natural way of promoting these hormones in the body, which could have certain medical benefits. Wild Yam can be used as an alternative to estrogen replacement therapy for treating symptoms of menopause or increased Progesterone. Wild yam may increase or stabilize estrogen levels in the body to help relieve a person’s symptoms. In addition to the previous health benefits, Wild Yam also contains a chemical called dioscoretine which has been shown to regulate blood sugar levels. We also included Astralagus. Astragalus is also regarded as a potent tonic for increasing energy levels. This may be due to its positive impact on the mitochondria, which serve as the “batteries” that power our cells. It makes sense when you consider that mitochondria burn oxygen for fuel, and researchers have found that astragalus increases “oxygen uptake and the systemic utility of oxygen. If you get stuck in stress mode, our bodies “steal” a hormone called pregnenolone to make extra cortisol. Pregnenolone is often called the “mother hormone” because it is used to make all kinds of hormones – estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and, of course, cortisol. If too many of our resources are directed toward making cortisol, it can impact levels of other hormones that are needed for energy. Low estrogen, high progesterone, low testosterone, and DHEA are all associated with decreased energy levels. Herbs like astragalus help the body maintain energy levels by making it more adaptive to stress, which means it can devote more energy to making various hormones instead of loads of cortisol. Dandelion Root was added because it is high in plant estrogens and plays a significant role in the detoxification of the body, which plays a crucial role in detoxifying excess hormones in the body. This herb may help to prevent constipation, which is a crucial step in clearing hormones from the body. Gingko Biloba was added because it has demonstrated a direct action on ovarian hormone production and inhibited the release of progesterone.
Next, we added Maca root. Maca Root is packed with protein, fatty acids, essential amino acids, fiber, vitamins, and minerals (zinc, magnesium, copper, potassium, calcium, and iron), and glucosinolates (found in cruciferous veggies and thought to have anti-cancer benefits). The fatty acids are good for the heart and beneficial in stabilizing blood glucose levels. Maca contains alkaloids and is also a major source of phytonutrients, it is an alkaline root and detoxifying for optimal health. Maca contains arginine which stimulates nitric oxide production (the same way Viagra works), likely why it is sometimes called the Peruvian Viagra. The maca plant also contains plant sterols that influence responses within the endocrine system, resulting in the body better able to regulate and achieve hormonal balance. Maca root may help modulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, which regulates women’s reproductive hormone levels. Studies have shown that Maca root may influence estradiol (or estrogen) levels in the body. Research suggests that Maca can help relieve symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and interrupted sleep. With balanced hormones, women can experience relief from PMS, reproductive support, increased libido and energy, and other benefits. We also added Bacopa. Bacopa is a foundational herbal remedy in the ancient healing traditions of both China and India. Bacopa is neither stimulating nor sedating but works by bringing functions of the body and brain into a state of balance. It is highly prized as a brain tonic for reducing stress and anxiety, boosting mental energy and clarity, and protecting the brain from aging. Bacopa can improve attention, memory, and the ability to learn in seniors, children, and everyone in between. Bacopa belongs to a small group of herbs known as adaptogens. Adaptogens increase resilience to stress and promote overall health by bringing the body into a state of balance known as homeostasis. Homeostasis is the body’s ability to actively maintain a stable internal environment, such as keeping body temperature constant. Like all adaptogenic herbs, bacopa helps balance the level of the potentially damaging stress hormone cortisol and helps support healthy adrenal function. The adrenal glands are an important part of a properly functioning stress response system. Adaptogens have the unique ability to simultaneously calm a stressed mind and increase mental energy without being either sedating or stimulating. In many ways, adaptogens act like a thermostat that keeps you in an emotional comfort zone. It is this ability to restore balance that makes bacopa equally beneficial for both anxiety and depression. Another way bacopa brings the body into balance is by regulating neurotransmitters, biochemicals that brain cells use to communicate with each other. Neurotransmitters regulate mood, appetite, energy, libido, motivation, propensity to addictions, and more. They control your ability to focus, concentrate, learn, remember, and turn off your mind when you want to relax or go to sleep. Bacopa is an expert regulator that dials neurotransmitter production up or down as needed. In this way, bacopa brings the levels of major neurotransmitters — serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine — into balance.
Chaste Berry was added because it contains diterpenoid compounds, which may be responsible for this supplement’s potential effects on hormones like prolactin and the neurotransmitter dopamine because elevated levels of this hormone are often associated with PMS. The supplement may also treat certain symptoms of PMS like breast pain, is used to treat a variety of different conditions, such as PMS, infertility, acne, and more. It is an ideal herb to balance female hormones. Vitex works by decreasing levels of prolactin, which in return balances out estrogen and progesterone. Next, we included Bladder Wack. Bladder Wack is a common type of seaweed like kelp. It exhibits a number of potential health benefits including thyroid health, improved metabolism, and circulation. It is also an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant food that can help strengthen the bones, improve heart health, and prevent you from aging prematurely. Bladderwrack is rich in iodine and was an early source of this important mineral. Iodine is essential for thyroid health and treating numerous illnesses and is also an important part of a healthy diet. As well as iodine, it is a reliable source of natural antioxidants and minerals like beta-carotene and potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Bladderwrack also contains mucilage, some of the B family vitamins and small quantities of vitamins A, C, K, and E. Iodine is essential for the health of your thyroid and to ensure that your hormones and metabolism remain in healthy balance. Iodine is necessary if the thyroid is to do its job properly and produce sufficient hormones. This is significant in terms of women’s health as a lack of hormones can hinder ovulation. Bladderwrack has natural anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been used down the years to treat various internal and external inflammatory conditions. Red Clover was also included. Red Clover can help alleviate various symptoms that are associated with women’s health (premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, menopause, and infertility). Holy Basil is our final addition to this blend. Holy basil contains vitamin A and C, calcium, iron, and zinc. It is also a reliable source of vitamin K. Vitamin K benefits your cardiovascular, bone, and digestive health. Holy Basil may help lower blood sugar and other metabolic markers like blood pressure and lipids (cholesterol markers, helped reduce fasting blood sugar and blood sugar after meals which means the body needs less insulin, which can reduce insulin resistance and help restore balance. In other words, holy basil can also address hormone balance by supporting the foundation—blood sugar regulation.
