Blender’s Notes Cough Drop:
Steep Me Self-help Tea combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. In this combination of herbs, we really wanted to offer a blend to help manage and regulate your cough. A cough is your body’s way of responding when something irritates your throat or airways. An irritant stimulates nerves that send a message to your brain. The brain then tells muscles in your chest and abdomen to push air out of your lungs to force out the irritant. An occasional cough is normal and healthy. A cough that persists for several weeks or one that brings up discolored or bloody mucus may indicate a condition that needs medical attention. At times, coughing can be very forceful. Prolonged, vigorous coughing can irritate the lungs and cause even more coughing. It is also exhausting and can cause sleeplessness, dizziness or fainting, headaches, urinary incontinence, vomiting, and even broken ribs. Cough – Mayo Clinic
In this blend we started with Cinnamon and Cloves. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties. It can be used to fight respiratory infections such as sinus infection, bacterial infection, bronchitis, coughing, bacterial infections in cystic fibrosis, ear infection and recurrent respiratory infections. Cinnamon can also function as an expectorant to thin phlegm, making it easier to cough up, and open the airways to relieve shortness of breath. Cloves can be quite effective in soothing a cough due to their medicinal properties. Cloves contain compounds that reduce inflammation in the airways, which can help alleviate coughing. These properties help combat the underlying causes of respiratory infections, providing relief from coughing fits. Cloves can function as an expectorant, helping to thin mucus and make it easier to expel, which is particularly helpful for phlegmy coughs. Cloves may also function as a natural cough suppressant, calming the cough reflex and allowing for better sleep and daily comfort. Next, we added Marshmallow Root. Marshmallow Root has been traditionally used to treat coughs and other respiratory issues. Marshmallow root contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats the throat, reducing irritation and inflammation. It acts as a natural antitussive, helping to suppress dry coughs. It can also help fight off respiratory infections due to its antimicrobial properties. Anise was added because it has chemicals present called creosol and alpha-pinene, function as expectorants and help loosen the bronchial secretions. Drinking a cup of a tea made of anise, German chamomile, saffron, licorice, fennel, caraway, cardamom, and black seed, reduces cough- and sleep-related discomfort. Thyme because it contains compounds like thymol and carvacrol, which have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds help to relax the muscles of the throat and reduce inflammation, making it easier to expel mucus and soothe coughing. English Ivy because it is primarily known for its expectorant actions and to help relieve symptoms associated with bronchitis, such as cough and shortness of breath. English ivy might stimulate mucus glands and have expectorant properties. Ginger is a well-known natural remedy for coughs. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help soothe a sore throat, reduce inflammation, and support the immune system.
Next, we included Borage. Borage has been traditionally used to treat various ailments, including coughs. The leaves and flowers of the borage plant are known for their medicinal properties. Borage leaves can function as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract. This can be particularly useful for relieving coughs and congestion. Borage contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties. This can help reduce inflammation in the airways, potentially easing cough symptoms. Linden flowers because they are used at treating colds, flu, bronchitis, and other similar respiratory problems. Not only does it reduce fever by promoting sweating, but it also alleviates cough, reduces sore throat irritation and pain as well as nasal congestion due to its mucolytic action (it helps dissolve mucus). Rosemary works in multiple ways to improve the health of our respiratory organs. Its expectorant activity helps to thin mucus and encourages its easy drainage to clear respiratory pathways. Its warming property soothes a sore throat and lubricates the tract to help in cases where the throat is irritated by excessive coughing. We also included catnip because it is a natural cough and sore throat remedy. It has been found in studies to have antispasmodic and bronchodilator properties that naturally soothe coughs and can even help with asthma. Honeysuckle has been traditionally used to help with coughs and other respiratory issues. The flowers and leaves of the honeysuckle plant contain compounds with anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, which can help soothe a cough and reduce phlegm.
We also included Gynostemma. Gynostemma has a longstanding tradition in natural medicine systems for alleviating coughs, colds, asthma, and symptoms stemming from respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis. Emerging research suggests its efficacy in supporting respiratory health by mitigating airway inflammation and potentially reducing allergic reactions. Also, we added Horehound. Horehound is an herb from the mint family, has been used for centuries to treat respiratory conditions, including coughs. It contains a compound called marrubiin, which acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen and expel mucus from the respiratory system. This makes horehound particularly effective for relieving coughs associated with colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory issues. Additionally, horehound has antispasmodic and analgesic properties, which can help reduce coughing spasms and provide some pain relief. Finally, we added in Plantain. Plantain is often used in herbal remedies for coughs and other respiratory issues. Plantain has demulcent properties, meaning it can soothe and protect irritated mucous membranes in the throat, which is helpful for dry coughs. It contains anti-inflammatory compounds that can help reduce swelling and irritation in the respiratory tract. Plantain may help fight off bacteria and fungi, which can be beneficial if your cough is due to an infection.
