Blender’s Notes Vaginal Atrophy – WIP:

Steep Me Self Help Tea combinations are a great way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf.   The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love for you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working.  All of our teas go thru a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination.  Once we have 100 people or more testing the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.

This blend is meant to help with the side effects that can be common with a diagnosis of Vaginal Atrophy. Vaginal Atrophy is the body’s lack of estrogen – that then can cause a thinning of the vaginal wall. It becomes drier, less elastic, and more delicate. Anatomical and functional changes involve the vulva, pelvic floor, and urinary tract. Vaginal dryness is the most common symptom along with Vaginal and vulvar burning and itching, Discharge, Uncomfortable or painful intercourse also called dyspareunia and at times recurring urinary tract infections. For many, these symptoms of vaginal atrophy can start in perimenopause, the years leading up to menopause. This blend is going to be working in two parts – addressing the building up of DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone, which is a naturally occurring hormone that can be converted to estrogen and testosterone. Within the body, DHEA is first converted to androgens and then further converted to estrogens in the system, and we are building on the balancing of the estrogen which is considered low with this diagnosis. The DHEA and DHEAs supplement we use is available here.   With the focus of these herbs – the herbs are trying to balance out your hormones.  These hormones are chemical messengers that help your cells communicate and trigger various actions. They are the bedrock of your body’s endocrine system, which regulates growth, reproduction, metabolism, temperature, and even your mood. Hormones and the endocrine system keep your body in a balanced state of homeostasis. Therefore, having a hormonal imbalance — too little or too much of a certain hormone — can have harmful side effects. A few side effects can be oxidative stress, infertility, and endocrine disorders. Women undergo natural changes to their hormone levels at certain times throughout their lifecycle, notably during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. With that, you know yourself better than anyone. Listen to your body because we do not want to overproduce estrogen!

In this blend we started with Holy Basil. When it comes to protecting the body from stress and restoring hormonal balance, holy basil has been shown to be quite a powerhouse. Holy Basil has been known to protect organs and tissues against chemical stress. It is also known to provide relief from emotional stress (thanks to its anti-depressant properties). Black cohosh is a traditional Native American herb that has historically been used to treat a variety of conditions, including menopause and menstrual issues. It is an herb well known for easing menopausal symptoms. Studies show that it can improve vaginal blood flow and raise interest in sex especially in the early stages of menopause. This means that it could raise libido and improve lubrication. It is possible that black cohosh could be used as a preventative for vaginal atrophy. Maca Root is an Andean plant and comes from the brassica (or mustard) plant family. Historically, Maca has been used in the Andes region to treat anemia, infertility, and female hormone balance. More recently, research has shown that Maca is useful for a variety of hormonal processes such as production of sex hormones, enhancing sex drive, stimulating metabolism, controlling body weight, increasing, energy, reducing stress, and improving memory. Next, we added Valerian Root. We added it because it can help by improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia by increasing GABA levels, reducing anxiety, depression, and stress by promoting relaxation, improving menopausal symptoms by balancing hormones, and enhancing memory and cognitive function by protecting neurons.

We added Rhodiola because it works for physical stress and is an excellent source of hormonal balance. When taken on a regular basis, your memory and mental fatigue improve. Rhodiola is also known as golden root. This powerful herb helps the body combat the negative effects of stress. It has been categorized as an adaptogen by Russian researchers due to its ability to increase resistance to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. It is also known to be one of the best “anti-aging” herbs due to its effects on cortisol levels. Cortisol is the “stress hormone” in our body. In high amounts for long periods of time cortisol accelerates the aging process. If you want to promote longevity – use this herb on a regular basis. We also included Ashwagandha, Thyme, Rosemary, and Oregano because they are adaptogen herbs and can help balancing hormones. Next, we added Flax Seed because the primary phytoestrogens in flax are called lignans, which are beneficial in estrogen metabolism and keeping those estrogen levels balanced. Red Clover was added because it is an herbal supplement that contains a handful of plant compounds called isoflavones that may act like estrogen in the body – biochanin A – formononetin – genistein – daidzein which showed a significant increase in estrogen levels. Sage was added to aid in reducing menopausal symptoms including reduced estrogen. And finally, we added Wild Yam or Colic root, it is an obscure but incredibly potent plant. The ancient herbal medicine has been used as a hormone regulator and a muscle and nerve relaxant for abdominal or intestinal cramping for centuries, making it a boon for women and those suffering from menopausal symptoms.

When talking about the many types of tea, Tisane (Herbal Infusion) or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is really not tea at all.  It is made like a tea and all the same items are used to make it, but it does not contain the Camellia Sinensis Plant (unless stated), but is simply roots, flowers, leaves, and fruits put together is a combination that is made just like a tea.  With that being said…the health benefits of a Tisane or Herbal teas are different.  They can vary depending on the ingredients and combination of herbs so there are no blanket health benefits – just depends on the ingredients.

For many, the best part of Tisane or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is the fact that it is caffeine free naturally.  Of course there are herbs that can be added to change that.  The most popular Herbal teas include Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, and any combination of fruit blends or infusions.  Our Self-Help Teas are simply supplemental herbal combinations to aid with an occasional ailment specific to what may be happening in your life.  The teas are built to work and are not build with any specific flavorings.  The blends are tested to the minimum requirements laid out by Steep Me A Cup of Tea.  The taste provided is natural to the herbs present in the blend.  No flavorings added.
