Blenders Notes Mental Health ~ Bipolar – WIP:

Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The blends in our Work in Progress section are still in their testing phases…. We would love you to try the blends and give us feedback on how you felt they were working. All our teas go through a thorough testing phase to ensure we are finding success in the combination. Once we have 100 people or more evaluating the blend and we are starting to see the same results in 60 or more of the testers…these blends will move to the Self-Help section.

This blend was built to help assist your body with mental health concerns and the difficulties that can come with a bipolar diagnosis. Bipolar disorder – previously known as manic depression, is a mental disorder characterized by periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood. During mania, an individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy, or irritable, and they often make impulsive decisions with little regard for the consequences. There is usually also a reduced need for sleep during manic phases. During periods of depression, the individual may experience crying and have a negative outlook on life and poor eye contact with others. The risk of suicide is high; over a period of 20 years, 6% of those with bipolar disorder died by suicide, while 30–40% engaged in self-harm. Other mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders and substance use disorders, are commonly associated with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder – Symptoms and causes – Mayo Clinic

In this blend we started with Ashwagandha because it  helps regulate cortisol, the stress hormone, which can reduce anxiety and improve resilience. It influences GABA and serotonin pathways, calming the nervous system and supporting mood balance. It also shows neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, which could support brain health and may help with depressive phases by lowering cortisol and reducing stress reactivity. We also added Black Cohosh. Black Cohosh contains compounds that act on estrogen receptors and may influence serotonin-like pathways, which can affect mood regulation. It shows improvements in menopausal depression and anxiety, especially when combined with herbs like St. John’s wort. It is traditionally used as a nervous system depressant; it can calm agitation and promote sleep. It can help reduce depressive phases by calming the nervous system and lowering stress and it acts as a sedative and anti-inflammatory, which could indirectly support mood stability. Sarsaparilla was added because it contains saponins, flavonoids, and plant steroids that show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity. By lowering systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, sarsaparilla could theoretically ease background contributors to mood dysregulation. Chronic inflammation is linked to depression, so anti-inflammatory herbs sometimes help with resilience. We included Bacopa because it is well-studied for memory, stress resilience, and anxiety reduction. It may support depressive phases and cognitive fog in bipolar disorder. Bacopa is both an adaptogen (stress regulator) and a nootropic (cognitive enhancer), so it modulates serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine, helping regulate mood, focus, and calmness. It also reduces cortisol and supports adrenal function, improving resilience to chronic stress and it shows improvements in memory, attention, and learning speed. Bacopa also shows antidepressant and anxiolytic properties, with reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Bacopa cay help with depressive phases by calming the nervous system and reducing stress and has cognitive enhancement since bipolar disorder often impairs memory and executive function. Bacopa has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that may reduce neuroinflammation, a contributor to mood instability.

Next, we added St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) because it has active compounds (hypericin, hyperforin) influence serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and melatonin, boosting mood and regulating sleep. It can help with mild to moderate depression and anxiety. St. John’s wort can be as effective as SSRIs for mild to moderate depression, with fewer side effects and increased calming effects, may reduce hot flashes and mood swings when combined with black cohosh and effective for seasonal affective disorder, PMS, somatic symptom disorder, and wound healing. St. John’s Wort  may ease depressive phases by boosting serotonin and melatonin and can improve sleep regulation via melatonin output. We also included Gingko Biloba because its flavonoids and terpenoids improve blood flow and function as antioxidants, supporting vascular health. Ginkgo may reduce depressive symptoms, may improve cognitive recovery post-stroke, and may improve memory, attention, and executive function in mild dementia or age-related decline. Ginseng was added because it  is a gentle and calming herb and can be used to combat fatigue and improve stamina. It shows improvements in attention, memory, and learning speed, especially when combined with ginkgo. As an adaptogen, ginseng helps regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, balancing cortisol and supporting resilience and enhances immune response and reduce frequency/severity of colds. Ginseng can lower blood glucose, useful in diabetes management and the  Ginsenosides in Ginseng can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, supporting cardiovascular and systemic health and it helps with depressive fatigue and cognitive fog and reduce stress-related depressive symptoms. We also included Steep Me Magnesium Blend for nerve function, neurotransmitter balance, and stress regulation. Research shows it can improve depression, anxiety, and sleep quality, and low magnesium is linked to worse mood symptoms. In bipolar disorder, magnesium may help with depressive phases, agitation, and even medication response. Magnesium supports over 300 enzymatic reactions, including those that regulate nerve signaling and muscle relaxation. It increases GABA activity (calming) and reduces excess glutamate activity (excitatory), helping prevent overstimulation. Magnesium helps regulate the HPA axis, lowering cortisol and improving resilience to chronic stress. Steep Me Magnesium Blend significantly improves depressive symptoms, especially in those with low baseline magnesium, it reduces cortisol and balances neurotransmitters, mimicking some anti-anxiety medications and low magnesium is linked to worse symptoms; supplementation may help regulate excitatory/inhibitory balance. The addition of Magnesium may reduce depressive symptoms, irritability, and insomnia, show calming effects for Bipolar and low magnesium levels have been correlated with increased severity of bipolar symptoms.

Next, we added Gotu Kola. Gotu improves memory, attention, and learning speed; some studies show benefits after stroke and in age-related decline. It increases BDNF and NGF, supporting new brain cell growth and protecting against oxidative stress. It can help reduce anxiety, startle response, and cortisol, with improved calmness and alertness by reducing mental fatigue and brain fog, relevant for mood disorders and it has  antidepressant effects, via serotonin and dopamine modulation. Plus, it is used as a natural sleep aid; it may improve insomnia linked to stress or anxiety. Valerian Root because it is known for its powerful sedative compounds, which help to calm the nervous system. It is often used as an alternative medication for those suffering from insomnia, feelings of anxiety, and mood disorders. Valerian encourages feelings of calmness, reduces nervous tension, stress, restlessness, feelings of anxiety, and regulates mild to moderate mood swings. We also included Damiana. Damiana contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and essential oils that may influence serotonin and dopamine activity, helping regulate mood. Damiana can produce antidepressant-like activity comparable to prescription antidepressants, via serotonin and noradrenaline modulation. Damiana is used as a nervine and can calm agitation and reduce stress-related symptoms. It shows neuroprotective properties, improving memory and protecting against age-related decline and may improve sleep quality and relaxation, useful in stress-related insomnia. Damiana may help with depressive phases by lifting mood and reducing anxiety and support sleep and stress resilience, which are often disrupted in bipolar disorder. Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) because it is a calming nervine herb that can help with anxiety, insomnia, and stress-related depression Passionflower increases GABA activity in the brain, calming overactive nerves and reducing anxiety and can improve sleep quality and duration, especially in people with insomnia. Passionflowers has  flavonoids and alkaloids that modulate neurotransmitters (GABA, dopamine, serotonin), helping reduce stress reactivity and is used for headaches, muscle spasms, and menstrual pain due to its antispasmodic and analgesic effects. In Bipolar, it may reduce anxiety, agitation, and insomnia between episodes and  support depressive phases by lowering stress reactivity. We also included Kava Kava. It can significantly reduce generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms, sometimes comparable to benzodiazepines. Kavalactones act on GABA receptors, slowing nervous system activity and promoting relaxation and Kava can improve sleep quality and duration, especially in stress-related insomnia. Kava Kava also has mild antidepressant activity by inhibiting dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake. For Bipolar it can help reduce anxiety, agitation, and insomnia between episodes and ease stress-related depressive symptoms.

Next, we added Steep Me Medicinal Mushrooms. These mushrooms are rich in antioxidants and beta-glucans, supporting immune balance and gut-brain axis and indirectly reduce inflammation, which is linked to depression and anxiety. They can enhance energy metabolism and mitochondrial function. They can stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) which supports neuroplasticity and memory and show reductions in depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. Plus, the ay improves cognitive clarity and resilience to stress. We also added Oregano. Oregano contains carvacrol, thymol, rosmarinic acid, and flavonoids, which protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. It helps lower pro-inflammatory cytokines, supporting systemic and brain health. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, and parasites, making it useful for gut and immune health and oregano compounds may modulate dopamine and serotonin, improving mood, concentration, and resilience to stress. Carvacrol and thymol may inhibit reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, boost neurotransmitter levels and improve mood and oregano reduces anxiety-like behaviors under chronic stress. Oregano may enhance alpha and beta brainwaves, improving focus and relaxation and its mild sedative properties can improve sleep quality by reducing inflammation and calming the nervous system. For Bipolar, it may ease depressive phases by lifting mood and reducing stress and support cognitive fog and sleep quality. Shilajit is said to improve cognition and may be able to help prevent or delay the onset of the disease. Fulvic acid in Shilajit may be responsible for its potential to protect against dementia. The fulvic acid in this herbal cure may help by blocking tau protein aggregation. The buildup of tau protein is thought to impair brain cells involved in learning and memory and has been noticed in people with neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or with cognitive impairment. WE also included Rehmannia Root because it helps by nourishing yin, reducing inflammation, and protecting the nervous system. It shows promises of neuroprotection, stress resilience, and mood regulation. It contains catalpol and iridoid glycosides, which protect neurons, reduce oxidative stress, and may support memory and cognition. Rehmannia contains neuroprotective compounds that may reduce neurodegeneration and support brain function, and it has antidepressant-like effects, via serotonin and dopamine modulation. Rehmannia is  an adaptogen-like tonic, it may help regulate the HPA axis and reduce stress-related symptoms. Plus, it may ease depressive phases by calming the nervous system and reducing inflammation and support cognitive fog and fatigue often seen in bipolar disorder. Finally, we included Hops. Hops have sedative, anxiolytic, and antidepressant properties. They may help with sleep, anxiety, and mild depression. Hops contain bitter acids (humulone, lupulone) and flavonoids (xanthohumol, 8-prenylnaringenin) that act on GABA receptors, producing mild sedative effects and improve sleep onset and quality, especially when combined with valerian or passionflower. Plus, hops reduce stress, anxiety, and mild depression in young adults and ease insomnia, agitation, and anxiety between episodes and support depressive phases by calming the nervous system.

When talking about the many types of tea, Tisane (Herbal Infusion) or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is really not tea at all.  It is made like a tea and all the same items are used to make it, but it does not contain the Camellia Sinensis Plant (unless stated), but is simply roots, flowers, leaves, and fruits put together is a combination that is made just like a tea.  With that being said…the health benefits of a Tisane or Herbal teas are different.  They can vary depending on the ingredients and combination of herbs so there are no blanket health benefits – just depends on the ingredients.

For many, the best part of Tisane or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is the fact that it is caffeine free naturally.  Of course there are herbs that can be added to change that.  The most popular Herbal teas include Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, and any combination of fruit blends or infusions.  Our Self-Help Teas are simply supplemental herbal combinations to aid with an occasional ailment specific to what may be happening in your life.  The teas are built to work and are not build with any specific flavorings.  The blends are tested to the minimum requirements laid out by Steep Me A Cup of Tea.  The taste provided is natural to the herbs present in the blend.  No flavorings added.
