Cancer can start anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and multiply (through a process called cell division) to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they should not. These cells may form tumors, which are lumps of tissue. Tumors can be cancerous or not cancerous (benign). Cancerous tumors spread into, or invade, nearby tissues and can travel to distant places in the body to form new tumors (a process called metastasis). Cancerous tumors may also be called malignant tumors. Many cancers form solid tumors, but cancers of the blood, such as leukemias, do not. Benign tumors do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. When removed, benign tumors usually do not grow back, whereas cancerous tumors sometimes do. Benign tumors can sometimes be quite large, however. Some can cause serious symptoms or be life threatening, such as benign tumors in the brain. Cancer cells differ from normal cells in many ways. For instance, cancer cells:
- grow in the absence of signals telling them to grow. Normal cells only grow when they receive such signals.
- ignore signals that normally tell cells to stop dividing or to die (a process known as programmed cell death, or apoptosis).
- invade into nearby areas and spread to other areas of the body. Normal cells stop growing when they encounter other cells, and most normal cells do not move around the body.
- tell blood vessels to grow toward tumors. These blood vessels supply tumors with oxygen and nutrients and remove waste products from tumors.
- hide from the immune system. The immune system normally eliminates damaged or abnormal cells.
- trick the immune system into helping cancer cells stay alive and grow. For instance, some cancer cells convince immune cells to protect the tumor instead of attacking it.
- accumulate multiple changes in their chromosomes, such as duplications and deletions of chromosome parts. Some cancer cells have double the normal number of chromosomes.
- rely on various kinds of nutrients than normal cells. In addition, some cancer cells make energy from nutrients in a unique way than most normal cells. This lets cancer cells grow more quickly.
Many times, cancer cells rely so heavily on these abnormal behaviors that they cannot survive without them. Researchers have taken advantage of this fact, developing therapies that target the abnormal features of cancer cells. For example, some cancer therapies prevent blood vessels from growing toward tumors, starving the tumor of needed nutrients. Cancer is a genetic disease—that is, it is caused by changes to genes that control the way our cell’s function, especially how they grow and divide. Genetic changes that cause cancer can happen because:
- of errors that occur as cells divide.
- of damage to DNA caused by harmful substances in the environment, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke and ultraviolet rays from the sun.
- They were inherited from our parents.
The body normally eliminates cells with damaged DNA before they turn cancerous. But the body’s ability to do so goes down as we age. This is part of the reason there is a higher risk of cancer later in life. Each person’s cancer has a unique combination of genetic changes. In this blend we incorporated many ingredients. We started with our Steep Me Medicinal Mushroom Blend. Cancer is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Various chemotherapeutic drugs have been extensively used for cancer treatment. However, current anticancer drugs cause severe side effects and induce resistance. Therefore, the development of novel and effective anticancer agents with minimal or no side effects is important. Notably, natural compounds have been highlighted as anticancer drugs. Among them, many researchers have focused on mushrooms that have biological activities, including antitumor activity. The aim of this review is to discuss the anticancer potential of different mushrooms and the underlying molecular mechanisms. We provide information regarding the current clinical status and modes of molecular actions of various mushrooms and mushroom-derived compounds. This review will help researchers and clinicians in designing evidence-based preclinical and clinical studies to evaluate the anticancer potential of mushrooms and their active compounds in diverse types of cancers. The bioactive compounds found in mushrooms include polysaccharides, proteins, fats, phenolics, alkaloids, ergosterol, selenium, folate, enzymes, and organic acids. The anticancer components in mushrooms are antroquinonol, cordycepin, hispolon, lectin, krestin, polysaccharide, sulfated polysaccharide, lentinan, and Maitake. Polysaccharides are the most potent mushroom compounds with antitumor and immunomodulatory properties, have shown cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cells, stimulate natural killer cells, T cells, B cells, and macrophages, leading to an increased immune response. It exerts an apoptotic effect via dysregulated polyadenylation and causes the termination of DNA or RNA elongation by binding it to the site where nucleic acids are to be bound. We also included Turkey Rhubarb. The tannins and anthraquinones present in Turkey rhubarb have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds scavenge the free radicals and lower the oxidative damage, reducing cancer risk. The anthraquinones also help kill the tumor cells, thus shedding some light on preventing metastasis. Emodin, a type of anthraquinone, induces a suicidal tendency in cancer cells and prevents cell cycle progression. Yet another anthraquinone, rhein, helps prevent the absorption of glucose by the cancer cells and modifies the membranes of these cells to kill them. Aloe-emodin, a bioactive component of Rhubarb, has shown anticancer effects. It was found that Aloe-emodin possesses anti-carcinogenic and anti-proliferative properties on human cancer cell lines. However, the effect was effective on specific cell types and not across all cell lines. Turkey rhubarb stores compounds like calcium oxalate, anthraquinones, tannins, and various fatty acids. The tannins and anthraquinones give them anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making them a potential cure for cancer and other health conditions, including chronic constipation. DHA Omega3 was also added because it has anti-tumorigenic effects and may help to treat and prevent cancer, including ovarian cancer. Omega 3’s are considered immunonutrients and are commonly used in the nutritional therapy of cancer patients due to their ample biological effects. Omega-3 PUFAs play essential roles in cell signaling and in the cell structure and fluidity of membranes. They participate in the resolution of inflammation and have anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. We added Slippery Elm. Slippery Elm contains compounds called phenolics, slippery elm may function as a natural free radical scavenger and oxidative stress reducer. Phenolics are antioxidants that have been shown to elicit cellular responses that counter oxidant stress, which contributes to aging and many chronic diseases. Plant phenolics also seem to help protect against pathogens due to their natural antifungal effects. Slippery elm may fight inflammation and cancer by: Blocking the release of oxygen radicals (superoxide, peroxyl) involved in inflammation, blood vessel damage, DNA damage, and cancer. Decreasing the production of interleukin 8 (IL-8), a cytokine that can cause inflammation and cancer. We also included Rabinogalactan. Arabinogalactan is a starch-like chemical that is found in many plants, and it contains polysaccharides that could inhibit cancer cell growth. It is used for infections, including the common cold, flu, H1N1 (swine) flu, ear infections in children, and HIV/AIDS. It is also used to treat liver cancer, as well as a brain condition caused by liver damage (hepatic encephalopathy). Some people use it to provide dietary fiber, lower cholesterol, and to boost the immune system. Arabinogalactan is a fiber that ferments in the intestine. It might increase intestinal bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, and have other effects that could be beneficial to digestive tract health. There is also information that suggests larch arabinogalactan might boost the immune system and help prevent cancer cells in the liver from growing.
Next, we included Sea Moss. Sea Moss is packed with cancer-fighting nutrients, including antioxidants, fucoxanthin, polyphenols, and others. When consumed regularly along with other cancer-fighting foods, a healthy diet, and an active lifestyle, sea moss may help prevent cancer in the first place or help patients fight it more efficiently. Garlic contains compounds such as S-allylcysteine, diallyl sulfide and diallyl disulfide which are anti-carcinogenic to humans and animals. Garlic and its bioactive constituents have been shown to have many properties in in vitro or in vivo studies: anticancer, antithrombotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, cardiovascular protective, hepatoprotective, digestive system protective, antidiabetic, antiobesity, neuroprotective, and renal protective Particularly, anticancer effects of garlic may affect cancer cells by modulation of many pathways including alteration in carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes, cell cycle arrest, and induction of apoptotic cell death and suppression of oncogenic signal transduction pathways. Next, we included Ginger. Ginger and its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of NF-kB, COX-2, and 5-LOX (the major pathways and switches of inflammation mentioned previously). Ginger also has been shown to protect against cancers and to demonstrate a chemoprotective effect, meaning it protects the body from the side effects of chemotherapy. Some characteristics of ginger’s actions include the following: Induction of apoptosis (programmed cell death) of cancer cells ~ Inhibits IkBa kinase activation (upregulates apoptosis) ~ Upregulation of BAX (a proapoptosis gene) ~ Downregulation of Bcl-2 proteins (cancer associated) ~ Downregulation of prosurvival genes (anti-apoptotic) Bcl-xl, Mcl-1, and Survivin ~ Downregulation of cell-cycle-regulating proteins, including cyclin D1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) (cancer associated) ~ Increased expression of CDK inhibitor, p21 (anticancer associated) ~ Inhibition of c-Myc, hTERT (cancer associated) ~ Abolishes RANKL-induced NF-kB activation ~ Inhibits osteoclastogenesis (type of bone cell that breaks down bone tissue to remodel and repair) ~ Suppresses human breast-cancer-induced bone loss. We added Steep ME Glutathione Blend. Glutathione can play both protective and pathogenic roles. It is crucial in the removal and detoxification of carcinogens, and alterations in this pathway can have a profound effect on cell survival. It acts as a regulator of cellular redox state protecting cells from damage. We also added Bupleurum because it has anticancer, apoptotic and antioxidant properties. It was able to induce impressively strong and dose-dependent cancer-killing effects on ovarian cancer cells. The extract also showed its ability to encourage cancer cell shrinkage. Overall, the anticancer effects of the extract were attributed to its ability to foster the programmed cell death of cancer cells, DNA fragmentation (a characteristic of apoptosis or programmed cell death) and a disruption of energy metabolism of cancer cells. Given its results in fighting ovarian and liver cancers, this herb holds the potential to be a tremendous natural cancer treatment. We also included Vitamin A, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin E. Vitamin A has antioxidant properties and might protect your cells against the effects of free radicals, which might play a role in heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. Vitamin D3 is found to have a protective relationship between sufficient vitamin D status and lower risk of cancer. The evidence suggests that efforts to improve vitamin D status, for example by vitamin D supplementation, could reduce cancer incidence and mortality at low cost, with few or no adverse effects. Vitamin E has a nutrient that helps protect your cells from harmful “free radicals.” Vitamin E also helps your body fight germs and keeps your blood vessels open and clear of clots. You may also hear it is called a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it needs fat to dissolve in your body.
Selenium was included because it can help lower cancer risk. Selenium can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Blood or plasma levels of selenium are usually lower in cancer patients. High selenium exposure decreased the risk of breast cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and prostate cancer. Fo-Ti Root, otherwise called rhein, may suppress certain types of cancer, such as breast, cervical, colon, lung, and ovarian cancer. It is thought that rhein modulates different signaling cascades in cancer cells and can prevent the progression of diverse types of cancers. Cayenne because it affects different cancers in separate ways, and the nature of the effect depends on the stage of the cancer. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin; traditional medicine employs this compound as an herbal remedy for the treatment of numerous chronic diseases, including cancer. Capsaicin demonstrates the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells; research suggests that the compound promotes apoptosis – the death of cancer cells. Next, we added Horseradish. Horseradish contains compounds called glucosinolates, which have been shown to activate cancer-fighting enzymes. These compounds can help detoxify and eliminate cancer-causing free radicals in the body. Additionally, glucosinolates may increase the liver’s ability to detoxify carcinogens and suppress the growth of tumors. Chanca Piedra can eliminate or prevent H. pylori in test tube studies, which may increase the risk of stomach cancer. Catuaba was included because it contains tannins, alkaloids like catuabine, fatty resins and aromatic oils. It also possesses certain flavonoids, sesquiterpenes and phytosterols. Catuaba contained epicatechins which are powerful antioxidants said to have both antibacterial and anticancer properties. Tamarind was added because it has antioxidant properties to help fight cancer, specifically renal cell carcinoma and found that its polyphenol compounds both decreased the progress of cancer and helped prevent it. Tamarind also contains many antioxidants, which are known to help prevent cancer. Lodhra contains bioactive components such as collotrin, loturidin, loturin, betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, acetyloleanolic acid, ellagic acid, flavonoids, symposides, salieroside, symplocoside, betacytoglucoside, symploeroside, benzoyl salierepide, saliboride, etc. Lodhra has powerful anti-inflammatory, antiandrogenic, antidiabetic, anticancer, antifibrinolytic, astringent, antiulcer, digestive, antitussive, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective and healing properties and is of immense importance in many disorders. including menstrual disorders, skin infections, liver problems, upset stomach, jaundice, fever, allergies, asthma, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, bleeding, diabetes, etc. In addition, it is a magical remedy for many gynecological and hormonal problems. abnormalities such as menopause, menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, leucorrhoea, yeast infection, and breast tumors. Gynostemma acts by modulating the activity of several cellular signaling pathways tied to cancer formation and progression. Gynostemma has also been found to boost the immune response by increasing the number of T-cells and natural killer cells in our bodies. T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells are two types of immune cells that can help fight cancer.
