Blender’s Notes Anxious Brain:

Steep Me Self-Help combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. The Anxious Brain tea was built to help with racing thoughts in the mind when the body feels relaxed – the list process – the overthinking of a task – the dark thoughts of what is to come or what happened in the past. This is different than our Anxiety in that this tea only addresses the mental aspects, where Anxiety also addresses the physical aspects tied to this ailment. In this tea we started with Egyptian Chamomile Flowers. Egyptian chamomile contains apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, promoting relaxation and reducing neuronal excitability—like how anti-anxiety medications work and it helps to ease tension and to calm the anxious mind. Apigenin, bisabolol, and other terpenoids in chamomile help reduce restlessness, irritability, and muscle tension by modulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Chamomile reduces neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, which are linked to anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline. Chamomile promotes deeper, more restorative sleep, which is critical for regulating mood and reducing anxious brain symptoms. Emerging research suggests chamomile may support memory and learning by reducing hippocampal inflammation and enhancing neuroplasticity. We also included Kava Kava. Kava Kava’s active compounds—kavalactones—enhance GABA receptor activity, which slows down neural signaling and promotes calmness. This is like how benzodiazepines work, but without sedation or dependency risk. Kava may inhibit the reuptake of these neurotransmitters, helping balance alertness and mood. Kava is known for inducing a state of “calm clarity,” making it useful for social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), stress-related insomnia, and anxious brain. By calming the nervous system, kava can improve sleep onset and quality, especially in people with anxiety-driven insomnia.

Next, we added Lemon Balm. helps calm anxiety and support brain clarity by boosting GABA activity, reducing cortisol, and enhancing acetylcholine—making it a gentle but effective herb for an anxious, overstimulated nervous system. Lemon balm increases levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a calming neurotransmitter that inhibits overactive brain signaling. This helps reduce anxious brain, restlessness, and racing thoughts. Lemon Balm may lower cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, which is often elevated in chronic anxiety and contributes to brain fog and memory issues. Lemon balm inhibits enzymes that break down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for attention, memory, and learning. This helps sharpen focus and reduce anxiety-induced cognitive impairment and even improve mood and cognitive performance. Plus, it has mild sedative effects that promote restful sleep, which is essential for nervous system recovery and emotional regulation. We also included Valerian Root. Valerian root enhances GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity by increasing GABA synthesis and inhibiting GABA breakdown. By enhancing GABA receptor binding this slows neural excitability, promoting relaxation and reducing anxious brain. Valerian may influence serotonin receptors, contributing to mood stabilization and emotional resilience and promotes deeper sleep stages without the “hangover” effect of sedative drugs. This supports brain detoxification, emotional reset, and cognitive clarity. Valerenic acid and valepotriates exhibit antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against stress-induced neurodegeneration.

Next, we added Hawthorn. Hawthorn was added because it may help reduce anxiety and support brain function by calming the cardiovascular system, enhancing neurotransmitter balance, and protecting against oxidative stress. Its effects are especially notable in anxiety linked to heart palpitations or autonomic dysregulation. Hawthorn stabilizes heart rhythm and reduces palpitations, which are common in anxiety and panic disorders. This is especially helpful for anxiety with autonomic nervous system involvement. Hawthorn may enhance GABAergic tone and influence serotonin pathways, contributing to mood stabilization and reduced excitability. Rich in flavonoids (e.g., vitexin, quercetin) and proanthocyanidins, hawthorn protects brain tissue from oxidative stress, which is elevated in chronic anxiety and inhibits acetylcholinesterase, helping maintain acetylcholine levels for memory, focus, and parasympathetic tone. It also may modulate catecholamine signaling, improving attention, and reducing hyperarousal. We also added Oat straw because it increases alpha brain wave activity, associated with relaxed alertness, flow states, and emotional stability. It may boost dopamine levels, improving mood, motivation, and pleasure—especially helpful in anxiety with low drive or anhedonia. Oat straw inhibits phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4), an enzyme linked to inflammation and mood disorders. This action helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression and shows improved attention, memory, and concentration. Rich in avenanthramides, oat straw reduces proinflammatory cytokines and protects against neurodegeneration. Ashwagandha helps reduce anxiety and calm an overstimulated brain by lowering cortisol, enhancing GABA activity, and improving sleep and cognitive clarity. Ashwagandha significantly lowers cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. It enhances GABA receptor sensitivity, promoting calmness and reducing neural excitability—like how benzodiazepines work, but without sedation or dependency. Ashwagandha stabilizes the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which governs the body’s stress response. This helps prevent overactivation during anxiety or trauma. Compounds like triethylene glycol promote non-REM sleep and help regulate circadian rhythms, breaking the anxiety–insomnia cycle. Bacopa because it regulates serotonin and dopamine, helping stabilize mood, reduce anxious rumination, and improve emotional resilience. It lowers cortisol, the primary stress hormone, which is often elevated in chronic anxiety and contributes to brain fog and fatigue. Bacopa improves memory, attention, and learning speed—especially under stress—by enhancing synaptic communication and neuroplasticity and because it is an adaptogen, bacopa helps the body and brain adapt to stress without sedation. Rich in bacosides, bacopa protects neurons from oxidative damage and inflammation, which are elevated in anxiety and neurodegenerative conditions.

Skullcaps have been used to treat anxiety and various nervous conditions. Skullcap has phytochemical compounds called baicalin and baicalein help for anxiety, tension, or stress; headaches; migraine, panic attacks; restlessness; sleep disorders; premenstrual tension and period pain; and to assist withdrawal from benzodiazepines. We also included Gingko Biloba because it is flavonoids and terpenoids improve vascular dilation and circulation to the brain, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to areas involved in mood and cognition. Ginkgo influences serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine pathways, supporting emotional balance and reducing anxiety symptoms. Its compounds neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which is elevated in chronic anxiety and contributes to neurodegeneration and may modulate the HPA axis and reduce cortisol levels, helping the brain respond more calmly to stressors. Next, Gotu kola’s triterpenoids—especially asiaticoside and madecassoside—stimulate dendrite growth and synaptic connectivity, improving learning, memory, and emotional resilience. Gotu kola lowers cortisol and reduces anxiety-like behavior, especially under sleep deprivation or chronic stress. Gotu kola may enhance GABAergic tone, helping calm an overactive brain and reduce symptoms of panic, restlessness, and racing thoughts. Its polyphenols and triterpenes protect neurons from oxidative damage and neuroinflammation—both elevated in chronic anxiety and cognitive decline. Finally, we added Hops. can help reduce anxiety and calm an overstimulated brain by enhancing GABA activity, lowering stress, and improving sleep quality. Their bioactive compounds act on key neurotransmitter systems, making them especially useful for anxiety with restlessness, tension, or insomnia. Hops enhance the activity of GABA, the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. This promotes relaxation and reduces neural excitability—like how benzodiazepines work, but more gently. Compounds like methylbutenol, humulone, and lupulone contribute to hops’ mild sedative action, helping ease anxiety, irritability, and tension. Prenylflavonoids like xanthohumol in hops exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which may protect against neurodegeneration and stress-induced cognitive decline, and Hops may reduce cortisol and modulate serotonin and dopamine pathways, supporting emotional balance and resilience.

Customer Advice on How this Tea Feels:

Drinking this tea made me realize the difference between anxiety and an anxious brain. As we know both can prevent us from being who we truly are and doing the things we love to do. After staying consistent with the anxiety tea blend I no longer have to turn around on my way to an event because my heart was racing so fast I couldn’t handle it, I feel confident in talking to new people or even someone I’ve hung out with hundreds of times, also feel comfortable in trying new things which is rare. But one thing that stuck around was my racing mind. Literally felt like I was in third person trying to talk to people, even while driving I just did not actually feel “there.” The scariest part was the dark thoughts that I just could not escape , and as time went on, they got worse and worse to the point where I was scared I might ‘actually’ harm myself. I gave this tea a chance and overnight it helped so much. I still have some depressing thoughts, welcome to having depression, however the dark thoughts vanished. Even the mild depressing thoughts are manageable, yes, they are there but I can manage them. I really appreciated the steep me family and what they have done for me; I could not take what was happening any longer and thought I would never feel happiness again. Thank you, guys, for what you do and have created, feel blessed to have met you!

When talking about the many types of tea, Tisane (Herbal Infusion) or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is really not tea at all.  It is made like a tea and all the same items are used to make it, but it does not contain the Camellia Sinensis Plant (unless stated), but is simply roots, flowers, leaves, and fruits put together is a combination that is made just like a tea.  With that being said…the health benefits of a Tisane or Herbal teas are different.  They can vary depending on the ingredients and combination of herbs so there are no blanket health benefits – just depends on the ingredients.

For many, the best part of Tisane or Herbal Tea or Self-Help Tea is the fact that it is caffeine free naturally.  Of course there are herbs that can be added to change that.  The most popular Herbal teas include Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, and any combination of fruit blends or infusions.  Our Self-Help Teas are simply supplemental herbal combinations to aid with an occasional ailment specific to what may be happening in your life.  The teas are built to work and are not build with any specific flavorings.  The blends are tested to the minimum requirements laid out by Steep Me A Cup of Tea.  The taste provided is natural to the herbs present in the blend.  No flavorings added.
