Blender’s Notes Edema:
Steep Me Self-help Tea combinations are a wonderful way to get health benefits outside of the standard tea leaf. In this combination of herbs, we really wanted to offer a blend to help manage and regulate the trapped fluids of the body – especially hands, feet, calves, and ankles. Edema is the medical term for swelling caused by fluid trapped in your body’s tissues. Edema happens most often in your feet, ankles, and legs, but can affect other parts of your body, such as your face, hands, and abdomen. Edema can affect anyone, but the condition most often affects people who are pregnant and adults who are 65 years or older. A symptom of edema is swelling in your body. Swelling occurs when a part of your body gets bigger because there is a buildup of fluid in your tissues. Swelling can happen anywhere on your body but most often affects your feet, ankles, and legs. There are several probable causes for an edema diagnosis including: Gravity: If you spend a lot of time sitting or standing in one place for too long, water naturally pulls down into your arms, legs, and feet (dependent edema). Weakened valves of your veins (venous insufficiency): When the valves in your veins are weak, it is hard for your veins to push blood back up to your heart and leads to varicose veins and a buildup of fluid in the legs. Underlying medical conditions: Conditions like heart failure and lung, liver, kidney, and thyroid diseases have edema as a symptom. Side effects from medication: Some drugs, like blood pressure or pain management medications, have edema as a side effect. Poor nutrition: If you are not eating a well-balanced diet or if you eat a lot of foods high in salt (sodium), fluid could build up in various parts of your body. Pregnancy: Swelling in your legs during pregnancy occurs as the uterus puts pressure on your blood vessels in the lower trunk of your body. Compromised immune system: An allergic reaction, infection, burns, trauma, or clots can lead to edema. Edema: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment (clevelandclinic.org)
This blend is based on White Tea. White Tea is made from the young leaves and buds of the tea plant, is known for its delicate flavor and numerous health benefits. When it comes to edema (swelling caused by fluid retention), white tea can be helpful due to its anti-inflammatory properties. White tea contains polyphenols, which are plant-based compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties can help reduce inflammation and potentially alleviate symptoms of edema. Additionally, white tea has mild diuretic effects, which can help the body eliminate excess fluid. Next, we added Fennel. Fennel has been traditionally used for its diuretic properties and helps reduce water retention and edema. By promoting urination, fennel helps flush out excess sodium and water from the body, thereby reducing swelling. Additionally, fennel seeds can aid digestion and relieve gas, which might also contribute to reducing bloating and discomfort. Hibiscus tea because it can be beneficial for managing edema (fluid retention) because it contains vitamin C, which supports collagen production and strengthens blood vessels, potentially reducing the risk of edema. Additionally, hibiscus has diuretic properties, which can help increase urine output and reduce fluid retention. We also added Uva Ursi because it contains compounds like arbutin and hydroquinone, which have antibacterial properties, and tannins, which help reduce inflammation and swelling. For edema, uva ursi’s mild diuretic properties can be beneficial. It helps increase urine production, promoting the elimination of excess fluids and toxins from the body. This can help reduce fluid retention and alleviate mild edema. Dandelion Root because it contains bioactive compounds like flavonoids and polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties can help reduce swelling and fluid retention. Nettles because it has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including edema (water retention). Nettle has diuretic properties, which means it can help the body eliminate excess fluids, potentially reducing edema. Additionally, nettle contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may help alleviate swelling. We also included Elderflower because it is a natural diuretic effect, which helps the body eliminate excess fluids and toxins through urine. This property can be particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with edema, as it can help reduce water retention and swelling.
Next, we included Ginger. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation. This makes it potentially beneficial for managing edema, which is characterized by swelling due to fluid retention. Ginger contains compounds like gingerol that can suppress molecules contributing to inflammation. Incorporating ginger into your diet, whether through fresh ginger, ginger tea, or supplements, might help alleviate some of the swelling associated with edema. Butcher’s Broom because it is known for its potential benefits in treating edema, which is the swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissues. This herb has diuretic properties, meaning it helps the body eliminate excess fluids, thereby reducing swelling. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory effects can further aid in alleviating symptoms associated with edema. Goldenrod was included because it is known for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial in managing edema. It helps increase urine flow and reduce swelling. Additionally, goldenrod is used to detoxify the body through the urinary and lymphatic systems, making it helpful for conditions like gout, arthritis, and joint pain. Next, we added Cleavers. Cleavers function as a natural diuretic, promoting the removal of excess fluids from the body through increased urine production. This can help reduce swelling associated with edema. Cleavers is believed to support the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in fluid balance and immune function. By stimulating lymphatic drainage, cleavers can help reduce fluid buildup and swelling in tissues. The herb also has anti-inflammatory effects, which can further aid in reducing swelling and inflammation. Horsetail was added because it is a perennial herb known for its potential health benefits in treating edema (fluid retention). Horsetail may help reduce edema due to its diuretic properties, which increase urine production and help the body eliminate excess fluids. Finally, we added Juniper Berries. Juniper berries are known for their potent diuretic properties, which can help reduce edema (swelling caused by fluid retention) by increasing urine production. This can be particularly beneficial for conditions where fluid buildup is an issue. Additionally, juniper berries contain compounds that may decrease inflammation.
