Blender’s Notes Black Gunpowder:

Gunpowder tea (zhÅ« chá; ‘pearl tea’) is named for the fact that its visual appearance resembles that of gunpowder. The tea leaves are specially selected for quality, size, and style so that they can be individually rolled by hand and according to tradition by experienced tea experts into very small, tight pellets. I Gunpowder tea production dates back to the Tang dynasty (618–907).  Black Gunpowder Tea is made with black tea where the leaves were allowed to oxidize and ferment before they were rolled and dried. This Black Gunpowder tea (also called “Black Pearls”) native to Zhejiang Province, in the eastern coast of China.  Gunpowder tea usually keeps for much longer than other tea and is favored because of this characteristic.  Black Gunpowder presents a pleasantly aromatic, mild, and full-bodied taste with a slight smoky note. The leaf has been rolled to pearls and has a shining anthracite color. The infusion is medium-dark, the bouquet aromatic and round.

Black gunpowder tea from China is known for its robust and slightly smoky taste. The flavor profile can vary depending on the specific variety and processing methods used. When brewed, it typically offers a rich, full-bodied flavor with hints of sweetness and a subtle astringency. The aroma is often described as earthy and vegetal.  Black gunpowder tea is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, and can help combat oxidative stress in the body. Regular consumption may support heart health by improving cholesterol levels and promoting better circulation. Additionally, the caffeine content in Black Gunpowder Tea can provide a gentle energy boost, making it an excellent alternative to coffee for those seeking a milder stimulant.

When preparing this tea, part of the ritual is to take a pinch of the gunpowder tea and drop it into a porcelain cup to hear the jingle and tinkle of the leaves hitting the sides. Boiling water causes them to open up like flowers and sink slowly to the bottom in graceful patterns, which adds a dimension of visual pleasure to drinking this tea. This tea produces a nice dark infusion and a pleasantly aromatic, slightly smoky, full-bodied taste.
