What is Sweet Tea!  Southern sweet tea, often simply called sweet tea, is a popular iced tea beverage primarily associated with the Southern United States. It is characterized by its sweetness, typically achieved by adding sugar or simple syrup to black tea and is almost always served ice cold and is a staple in Southern cuisine.  Usually made with black tea it contains sugar, which is the most common sweetener, but artificial sweeteners can also be used.  Sweet tea is more than just a drink; it is a cultural icon in the South. Its presence in restaurants is often used to determine if a location is truly Southern. The drink symbolizes hospitality and is commonly served at gatherings, barbecues, and family meals.  The first known recipe for sweet tea was published in 1878 by Marion Cabell Tyree in her cookbook “Housekeeping in Old Virginia.” Over time, sweet tea evolved from a luxury item to a widely accessible beverage enjoyed by many.
